I’m pretty good friends with an offensive lineman who was on the team last year, and he claims that Penning is a fricking retard. Like coaches have to speak slowly to him haha

I haven't seen anything positive yet from him. He looks like the worst player on the field on every snap.

Yep. Whomever is responsible for Davenport Turner Penning and Foskey should be canned.

It's a pretty solid indication he's a tard. Not like as an insult, a guy with a very low IQ

Multiple coaches and scouts frubber stamped this guy and deemed him worthy of a trade up and a top 20 selection. Thats bad.

Outside of Carr I don’t think anyone else’s success is more important than Penning

I don't see how watching that movie before games makes him a tard. Meathead? Maybe. Regardless, I'm sure NFL history is littered with guys who were barely functional intellectually. The reality is just may not be a good football player. He wouldn't be the first 1st round pick to fit that mold.

Perhaps the Saints FO should stop putting so much stock into 5 days at the Senior Bowl and routinely trying to prove they are the smartest guys in the room by drafting small program prospects early. Yes, there are always diamonds in the rough from small schools, and also busts from big programs, but usually a guy is at UTSA, Northern Iowa, etc for a reason. He wasn't a good enough player to play at a power conf. level.

The hoped to get Charles Cross, and reached for Penning. He was never a 1st day starter which a 1st round pick should be. He was never a OT, just a big OG playing OT against inferior teams.

The most important organ in the human body to be a good football player is the brain. These are all the attributes needed to perform the actions and get better, but without the brain thinking properly you won't succeed.

I still laugh at how people on here were arguing when we picked this dude that all of the absolute terrible trades we made were worth it, because we got Penning. What a dumb take back then, and what confirmation we now have. While I had nothing against the actual pick (I rarely get upset with any pick, as I am not a scout), the trades we made were on par with the entire draft for Ricky one. Claiming it was all worth it because PENNING is now proven to be stupid.

So I watched parts of the game last night, had it recorded.

Penning was worse than I could have anticipated. He is just that bad.

He can't play.

this is so disheartening. for frick's sake. and one of the worst parts is, the staff gave him the starting LT spot last year and then has given him the starting RT spot without either having been earned.

He just...can't play.

He is a headcase and that is clear. Totally in his head and any DL worth anything is going to annihilate him.

They have to move him to Guard or bench him

not sure there's a team that's invested more into their lines and has such little to show for it than the saints

If the reports about Cross are true, I guess we should be fortunate we didn't get desperate and grab Penning at 11. Olave has his problems, but I doubt he falls to 19 so no telling what WR they reach for there.

For the posters saying he wasn't worthy of a 1st round pick, for what it's worth there were a lot of "experts" that put together draft profiles that agreed with the pick. You won't see many that had him out of the teens, and everyone I have seen had him in the 1st. His positional value was between the 4th - 6th OT in the draft (4th selected). What we don't know is where did the other teams (actual scouts) have him ranked vs these people that get paid to be wrong all the time and don't have their careers tied to how many of these picks they scout/grade correctly.

Would be hard to imagine that. Hopefully when they replaced the offensive coaching staff, they also replaced the offensive scouting team as well.
