Perhaps the Saints FO should stop putting so much stock into 5 days at the Senior Bowl and routinely trying to prove they are the smartest guys in the room by drafting small program prospects early
This has been the problem since Payton. They had one Super Bowl victory and continue to live off that like they are untouchable.
Plenty questioned the Davenport pick, even more so the Turner pick. Both were projected 3rd 4th round talents that shot up after the senior bowl or right before the draft. Same for the penning pick.
I’m always skeptical about players like this instead of ones that showed it throughout the entire season.
Loomis and company just have this cockiness about it and the results speak for themselves. There is a reason this team has been stuck in mediocrity for years and it starts at the top.

Not sure what you mean by "years"?
Post Brees the last 3 have not been good. 2020 was the last of 4 straight division titles.

I read this story this morning and thought about Penning. Guard is usually the last stop for highly drafted tackles that bust.
He should have been penciled in at LG before training camp.
Front office and coaches dropped the ball.
Peat should be playing LT, penning at guard and the rookie at RT. I’d feel a whole lot better about this team if they went this direction which I thought was the case before they made no effort to resign Peat.
Instead Penning is looking horrible at tackle and we have a rookie starting at LT. Something HOF Willie Roaf didn’t even do. Carr is gonna get killed.

still wondering if McCoy can make the LG switch in this offense. I think Ruiz can plug C a bit easier.

story line sound familiar?

“It’s still O-line at the end of the day,” Becton said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’ve still got to get my hands, I still got to do my footwork. So it’s just all about having my footwork, just got to do it tighter than I did at tackle.”

That is the mind-numbing part about this.
He signed a 1 year deal for like $2M with the Raiders, and we could have extended him to soften the blow a bit of his dead cap.

Peat is about the have the biggest glowup among Saints fan in history

Well he played better at LT than LG and for $2M and our other options...
I'm not proclaiming him to be an all-pro, but for $2M?

You are correct, I'm just saying all of the people that bitched about Peat for a decade are going to be pining for him

we've had years of peat getting hurt off and on.
we paid peat a lot of monies in those years for average at best performance.
his value at end wasn't too too bad but still...
we have to learn to move forward and rebuild. but Penning sucking arse puts a huge dent in our ability to do so sooner than later.

I saw a player that didn’t trust himself to play with technique at all. Went away from everything.
Maybe he’s been coached out of his natural born talent.

What can't you guys understand about Peat. He turned down the Saints offer and went back home to Arizona. He probably felt lucky to be able to finish his career back near Arizona.

The first vet castaway that can play RT needs to be signed by the Saints...even if it's a Peat level player.
That's how bad Penning was on Sat.

I'm positive that the FO and staff are also looking around for trades they can make for a competent RT before the big cut day as nothing is guaranteed to pan out in that free for all.

I was of the same thought until I saw this last preseason game. He plays with no leverage. Backup linebackers were pancaking him. Being that tall with no leverage is a a death sentence for a guard. He either figures it out at RT or he's gone IMO.

For the posters saying he wasn't worthy of a 1st round pick, for what it's worth there were a lot of "experts" that put together draft profiles that agreed with the pick. You won't see many that had him out of the teens, and everyone I have seen had him in the 1st. His positional value was between the 4th - 6th OT in the draft (4th selected).
I would just assume that a team would put more stock in what they see through their own professional eyes and experience to make a 1st Rd pick instead of going by guys writing to sell propaganda. If Penning has a learning deficiency then that should have been very evident during the pre draft process.
I only recall predraft was that he was a big run blocker that struggles with pass protection. Why did they think they could coach him in pass protection then but not be able to do it in 2 years so far?

I doubt the teams pay any attention to these draft profiles, but it is the only information that we can go off of. That's why I said
As fans, we can only go off of what the media/"experts" put out there because we do not have the resources to watch film on all draft eligible players. And a lot of time, these guys "surge up the draft boards" after senior bowl/combines because this is when the "experts" not affiliated with teams finally have an opportunity to really study some of these smaller school players. But you can't rule out a team's scout falling in love with a combine warrior because you do see it happen so often.
Ironically, I am pretty sure a poster was bashing the Penning pick back in 2022 because he struggled at the senior bowl practices.

What we don't know is where did the other teams (actual scouts) have him ranked vs these people that get paid to be wrong all the time and don't have their careers tied to how many of these picks they scout/grade correctly.

So he refused to sign with a team he’s spend a decade with to sign for the Raiders of all teams for 2 million? So you think if the Saints offered 3 he wouldn’t have stayed?
Peat was very frustrating with the injuries but I always thought he filled in solidly at LT but we had Armstead there. And he seemed to not get as injured playing LT instead of guard. I think everyone on here would take Peat for three million to be a backup or likely starter.
Fans including me complained about him b/c everyone and i mean everyone bitched about the stupid contract Loomis gave to him.
But hey these geniuses know more than the average fan….

One major problem was the level of coaching he has received, along with forcing him in way too early in his career.
If he was drafted by, say, Philly, or under Bill Callahan, and allowed to develop for 2 years, I think he could be a solid starter or maybe a good starter now.
He was drafted into a disaster situation with a terrible OL coach, offense, and he was thrust into a starting spot when he was clearly not ready, which has affected him mentally in a very negative way.
