Penning looks slow and unathletic

Yet has a high RAS score which the saints obviously value above many other traits. Our entire team is athletic as frick. He's just new to the NFL speed and needs time to adjust. Have Faith

I don’t understand not flipping Hurst and Penning. The former has been a solid LT.

I imagine transitioning to guard for game speed would have been easier; but I can admit I'm not sure if true.

He seemed to get beat when he has to make a decision (either block far inside vs out) and got beat by speed not power.

I can’t imagine it not being so - guards have help on both sides.

Still feels like we used a 1st on a RT when we already have the best one in football.

Has hurst ever played tackle?
He's played far more tackle in his career than guard, for reference.

As someone else said, he was our starting lt last season.

That would be the worst thing to do to start his career if the problems are largely technique, which they are.

His biggest issue was in his pass sets, not finding the proper depth or angles on his drops, as you said getting beat by "speed". It's not that he is too slow, moreso he was just out if position.

This could be an issue of not knowing the play calls well enough yet to know where he should set as well.

Either way, his problems seen correctable, so no need to panic and pull eject yet. He just needs seasoning.

You can go back and read the very same stuff on this board about Strief at RT, "Too slow, not getting better and costing us games". Ended up one of the best RT's and now coaching. Penning will not be starting for long with games like he had Sunday. But they are going to give him every chance to learn and improve. The guy is just a mauler at run blocking and loves to pancake Dlinemen.

I think this is the case. Penning did better in the second half with a little help and without and play calling. Also the Titan DL are one of the better DLs in the league. I don't believe you make this kind of drastic move after one game and against a very good DL.

Not happening. DA was adamant in his presser he’s the LT and will get better with experience

I think this will be what happens eventually but if you think they are just gonna give up on a 1st round draft pick after his first start then you are an idiot.

They are going to give him AT LEAST half the season to work it out.

In the end, I agree, Penning will not be LT.

He’s barely played jfc settle down. He played better in the second half. He’s a young player who is developing. He will improve with more game time

Things happen quicker on the inside, DTs are closer to Gs than a DE to a T. Penning is athletic, just has some technique issues that he improved on in the 2nd half.

They gave up a ton to get the dude to be the LT of the future. It’s an epic fail if he has to play guard. Thus, you cannot just move him off the position after one half of his first start at LT

I don’t even think Penning has worked at guard here.

I don't think he has a single snap at guard here. In college I only found 1 start he made at guard.

I know hes athletic but he also struggles with athletic quick guys which is strange. He was struggling in preseason too. Whats a bit concerning is his struggles with just athletic fast defensive players who aren’t even big name guys. I’m sure some of that is technique but some if just using your athleticism to stay in front of a guy.

Strong management skills here. One player at a position means the OC and HC should be fired. Great stuff

The knock on Penning in the draft was that he was clearly a project, very raw and really didn't know how to play the position yet.

That is readily apparent. Hopefully the experience catches up to the raw talent.

I guess my question would be for the Saints why take him in the first round then? Remember Ramczyk was taken late in the first and was ready to go from day one. I believe Mccoy and Ruiz also were first rounders and proready- granted they were a center and a guard plus Ruiz struggled a bit. Just seems looking back Penning should have been a second or third round pick. Even Armstead was drafted in the third round.

Because he has traits to be a dominant LT in this league despite what our stupid fan base thinks. Not everyone drafted in the first round comes in and is a badass. Our fans are absolutely SPOILED by that 2017 draft class and forget a lot of picks take a couple of years to work out
