Saints sign Drew Brees

Brees announced as Saints starter

#2 in yards and touchdowns all time, Super Bowl MVP

Best thing to ever happen to the Saints

It was a great day for sure but the best decision for the Saints ever made is when John Mecom decided to sell the team.

That was a great decision, but we had no other choice and neither did Drew.

Almost 5 years retired and he is probably still better than half the QBs in the league and way better than any on the Saints roster now.

RIP John Clayton

Crazy that Loomis was here for that time and here he is still GM. Currently 3rd longest GM tenure in the league, 4th longest is 8 years behind Loomis.

Anyone downvoting must have been a fan only during the era of the Benson ownership. If Mecom still owned the Saints 19 years ago, they never would have signed Drew or probably even hired Payton.

No coaches with a winning record, winningest coach under Mecom - Bum Phillips - 27-42-0 (.391). The second-winningest was Dick Nolan at 15-29 (.341) Nolan's final season was the year the Aints moniker was coined along with the paper bags.

Coaches with a worse record under Benson than Bum - Mike Ditka - 15-33-0 (.313)

I bought season tickets based on that signing.

Didn’t think it would end up with a Lombardi (obviously a boy could dream) and his career being like it was but it showed the Saints were serious and I was going to contribute to the team staying in NOLA (admittedly in a tiny way).

I wonder if 19 more years-old me would make the same decision now?

PS: The Mecom years were absolutely brutal.

yep, and no one expected that 15 years later he would become a poster boy for the blm movement…

Sorry but anyone still thinking about how he supported his teammates and framing it as a pejorative is just simply a soft man. It gets boring hearing all of the Drew Brees haters constantly whining about him taking a knee. I didn't even know anyone still cared about that. The guy was an absolute Legend as a football player regardless of any of your political sensitivities

Mecom would've sold the team regardless. Benson and his group kept them in New Orleans. Remember, Jacksonville wanted them real bad.

he also had a chance to tell the mfl to kiss his arse and he folded like a lawn chair…

Still, the best thing that ever happened to the Saints. Maybe Benson deciding to put together that group was the best decision ever made regarding the Saints.
