The defense was still good in 94 and 95. The offense was questionable. Turnbull was pretty good as was Demond Winston. But by 96 they were gone and fee agency was kicking the shite out of them.

In fact, Mora never won a playoff game as an NFL head coach, either with the Saints or the Colts.

Kind of gives a special note to his rant as Colts coach about "Playoffs? Are you kidding me? Playoffs? Don't talk about playoffs!"

So I have a question for the historians. Why did Mora quit after the Carolina game?

he was going to be fired any way, that was obvious. they already told him fire carl smith or you will be fired and he refused and stuck with smith.

finally he had to admit to himself that smith was a complete dumbass and he had to go, so mora just quit rather than face having to fire his buddies

I heard he was fired, even though Mora "resigned". They never had any weapons on offense and made awful draft picks. Remember Vaughn Dunbar and Irv Smith? Didn't draft Eddie George, when available, settled on Alex Molden, because Lemmerman was a Pac 10 guy. Everett was ok at best

He was dead set on moving the team to San Antonio until then commission Paul Tagliabeau blocked him from doing it. Benson was basically forced to keep the saints here. The PR fallout from abandoning a suffering american city would have been immense

Mel Gray, one of the greatest return specialists of all time.

Saints let him go in Free Agency. Starting the year after he left?

Mel Gray,

Dumped him and replaced him with Derrick Shepard, who we had to release a month later because he muffed too many punts.

Barry Word. Yeah, he had drug issues but he had a short run with the Chiefs.

They got rid of Dave Waymer too soon too. He had a short run with the 49ers as well.

Also got rid of Lorenzo Neal after a gruesome leg injury.

And the Bobby Hebert fiasco, which as I said was more Finks than Mora. We didn’t need him because John Fourcade had a nice 3-game run at the end of 89. And then we overreacted and traded a 1, 2 and 3 for Steve Freaking Walsh. And then after all that shite, we had to cave in and bring him back in 91, just to run him out of town after 92. Set the team back a few years and helped build the Cowboys dynasty.

Naaah Finks hated Hebert for sitting out in 1990 and then being involved in the lawsuit that brought about today's free agency. Then Hebert comes back in 91 and 92 and leads the Saints to its best 2 year run up until that point. Then the playoff loss to the Eagles....

Finks was so incredibly pissed about that game as was Mora, that there was NO negotiation with him. Then they signed Wade Wilson and the Saints get off to a fast start.....and then the wheels start to come off....almost overnight.

My point was they both made it personal back in 89 and then acted like we didn’t need him because we had John Fourcade. I mean, who needs Bobby Hebert when you have John Fourcade, right?

And then they poured gasoline on the fire with the STUPID Steve Walsh trade. Jimmy Johnson completely fleeced the Saints. He knew he was too small and didn’t have an NFL arm. We had to give up Pat Swilling just to get the 1 back we lost for Walsh, not to mention the other 2 amd 3 we gave up.

And, by the way, the worst loss that 93 season after we let Hebert walk came game 7. The Saints were 5-1 coming off a bad loss to Pittsburgh and were in line for an easy home win against the Falcons. And the Falcons kicked their asses.

The Falcons QB that day? Bobby Hebert. He almost came back and beat them off the bench week 2.

Mora does deserve some blame for that because as you said, he played a part in how that went down. That was the year Dan Dieedorf dressed down Saints fans on MNF because they “cheered” a Wade Wilson injury. They weren’t cheering his injury. They cheered because the season was going down the toilet and that was the only way stupid stubborn arse Jim Mora was going to take Wade Wilson out of the game. Dude had lost all his confidence by then but Mora was going down with the ship.

This, This, and This

I was at that game. I cheered for that EXACT reason, most of the game the crowd was booing and voicing their disgust in the team's performance, yet they still did the same old gameplan. I remember now how stubborn the franchise was.

And then that night Mora flipped out saying the fans are sick to save face. I was so pissed when he said that.

If I remember right after Finks three of them Mora, Kuharich and one other convinced Benson to let them do the GM job as a team. This of course saved all three of their sorry arse jobs and was a complete disaster.
Jim Miller was the third party.

This is the same story I heard from someone who was around for it.

This appealed to Benson because he was ultimately cheap in his heart of hearts and his ego didn’t care for Finks competing with him to be the alpha.

It took years of wandering in the wilderness after Finks for him (Benson) to finally face reality & allow another strong GM into the organization.
