ESPN's Seth Walder thinks the Saints lost the Tyree Wilson trade with Las Vegas

I have no idea who this guy is but it seemed like a good trade for the Saints to me. I guess that's why he's on TV and I'm not.

Raiders trade Edge Wilson to Saints
Saints get: Edge Tyree Wilson, No. 219
Raiders get: No. 150
Saints grade: C+
Raiders grade: B
One of the disappointments of the 2023 draft was traded during the 2026 draft.
Wilson was selected with the seventh overall pick three years ago but never delivered on the pass-rushing promise he had as a prospect. His 5.8% pass rush win rate as a rookie would have ranked second worst among edge rushers had he played enough to qualify, and he managed 3.5 sacks that season. The following season was not much better -- 4.5 sacks but a fourth percentile pass rush win rate.
But Wilson's numbers went up in 2025. While playing 41% of the Raiders' defensive snaps last season, Wilson recorded an 8.8% pass rush win rate at edge, which put him in the 23rd percentile. His run defense metrics are much better, at least. He would have been in the 95th percentile in run stop win rate had he qualified, thanks in part to his 19.6% tackle rate against the run -- one of the highest rates in the league for an edge. But I take that with a grain of salt, considering that the Raiders played him substantially more on typically pass-heavy third downs (57%) than more balanced early downs (36%).
Wilson's improvement in pass rushing from abysmal to merely below average probably makes him a rotational player, but I remain skeptical given the really low level of play he demonstrated in his first two seasons in the league.
The Saints will get Wilson for cheap in the final year of his rookie contract. While he mostly played as a 9-technique edge rusher with the Raiders, he spent some time further inside, with at least 100 snaps each at 7-, 6-, 5-, 4- and 3-technique.
He'll see the field for the Saints, and there's always a chance he starts to put it together more with a new team and new scheme. But I don't think I would have made this swap -- which works out to be the equivalent of a late fifth-round pick -- for the right to find out and with just one year left on Wilson's contract.

I don’t see how we lost this one.
What’s the percentage a 5th rounder even makes the team? Has to be 50% at best.
We traded a coin flip roster spot for someone who was the 7th pick overall 3 years ago. Seems a worthwhile gamble to me

Sadly, most raiders fans agree with him.
Haven’t seen one fan say this was a bad trade for them.

We gave up basically nothing for the chance to see if he can get his 8.8% win rate up to 10-11% rushing the passer.
FWIW last year Cam Jordan was at 9.8% and they’re pretty similar vs the run.

How do they win when they had to give up a top ten pick from 3 years ago for a 5th rounder and also had to give another pick? That's a loss every time no matter what. All he has to do to be a net positive for the Saints is make the team. Even if not, it's a wash.

It doesn’t have to be a bad trade for them, they’re getting value
It’s just like the Penning trade we made. If Staley can unlock something in him, do you think it matters what raiders fans say?

I don't think we "lost" this trade in any way, but how you tried to frame the analysis is terrible. That's not how this works

I mean the only guy I rather have wanted around that pick is pat coogan since we need a backup c/g and he was available.
Overall it's a late (I mean really late comp) 5th round pick. That's got less than a 20% hit rate

That's exactly what they brought him in to do, and that is value in the 5th round because if a 5th rounder plays that's what he's doing. Plus he's on the last year of his rookie deal. Plus they got a pick out of it in the 7th. What's not to like? The guy is evaluating him as a 1st round pick, and that's not what this is. Typical dumb media guy who doesn't understand football.

There are about 3 YouTube channels I no longer go to because of stupid opinions like this. If he has a YouTube channel it'll become number 4.

I would do these kinds of trades all day every day. First round talent for a late 5th rounder. Even if he is a bust who cares. It is worth a shot and at worse he is solid rotational run defender. Some times players make big leaps with scheme and team changes. Could end up paying off big. It is unlikely that the raiders end up getting more from that pick than we do from Wilson unless they just knock it out of the park with a hidden gem which is possible but not at all likely.

If I may chime in...
Tyree Wilson when he was drafted was a consensus top 10 pick. We took him at #7 and I was stoked. You couldn't build a better DE prototype, super high ceiling.
The good: He's decent vs. the run. He can set the edge and either make the tackle or redirect inside.
The bad: His pass rush severely lacks. He's got one move - the bull rush. If that doesn't work, he's all out of ideas. Worse than that, he's continuously, almost humorously late off the snap. Kind of a running joke in Raiderland, memes with a snapshot of a play half over and Tyree is still in his 3 pt. stance. Seems like a good dude but he hasn't learned anything.
I don't think the Saints got robbed, just know you're getting about what you'd expect from a late 5th or 6th round pick. A rotational 2 down DE.

Pretty sure if we don't re-sign him, we get a comp pick, too.

People like this guy are very shortsighted.
Let’s say the dude has 10 sacks and gets a big payday in free agency….
Guess what the Saints get?
That’s correct, another compensatory draft pick.
So they paid almost nothing for a dude with a high ceiling that could possibly net you a much higher pick (via compensatory) than you gave up to get him.
Sounds like a winner to me and I’m no sunshine pumper.

I wonder if him playing the wide 9 standing up would fix that? I, for one, am fine with it. If you sign Cam back, Wilson becomes your replacement for Rumph, which I think he is an upgrade over.

Who the frick cares if we "lost" a trade where we gave up a 5th for a 7th and got a potential pass rusher. xD

Correct. It may not pan out but effectively costs us nothing.
It is very similar to what we did with Chase Young and that mostly hit. This one may not turn out the same way, but the potential reward far outweighs the risk (which is almost 0).
If he was a total failure, it would be different but he's pretty competent in the run game so he can contribute some on the field.
