Definitely overestimating…. I saw elsewhere on here that Arians drew a 6th… not saying the situations are identical but there’s a HUGE difference between the “two firsts” posts I’m seeing here and a sixth rounder

Well good, bc they’re not similar
The NFL told the Bucs they were free to sign Arians without compensation. They only exchanged late picks in a deal of good faith bc Arizona balked that they still had Arians’ rights. Arians would’ve been in the final year of his deal in Arizona when he signed with TB. They had just hired Kingsbury and had no reason to play hardball

I don’t think this is correct, is it?
I believe his “retirement” pauses the deal, so that whenever he would return he’d still have to fulfill all years remaining before FA. You can’t just wait out your deal

If he wants to coach in the NFL prior to 2027 it starts at a 1st round pick and access to their roster for compensation.
Two 1st's if it's Dallas or and divisional team.

a few thoughts. Now that SP has retired, I think the trade value goes down pretty significantly, but I'm still confident there's a first in that deal somewhere.
I think the sooner the better. There are 9 teams shopping for HCs so Im not sure the market will ever be this good.
Lastly, will SPO agree to coach next season? If not, it'll make for a truly awkward situation for whatever team makes the deal.

If Payton decides to get back into coaching, I want everything I can get if he chooses a divisional rival or an NFC team. If he chooses an AFC team, I will be more willing to deal.

if we were to trade him this year, to Dallas, i could see a 1st and 2nd rounder... next season, 2nd rounder at most

I agree, but we are on good terms with Payton. The team won't want to spoil that relationship. As long as he isn't going to a rival or a local rival (ie the Cowboys), I think they will let him go for relatively low compensation. I wish they wouldn't, but I can't imagine Mickey or Gale telling the man who brought this franchise it's only championship "yeah, you can't continue your career unless your future team gives us two drafts" ...
