Compensation for Payton

If he comes back and coaches for another team, they have to “trade” for him, correct? Since he’s still under contract with us, does it matter how long he sits out?

Yes, once his contract expires (through the end of the 2026 season) with NOLA, the Saints would not receive any compensation (picks or $).

Great.
If he wants to coach in the NFL prior to 2027 it starts at a 1st round pick and access to their roster for compensation.
Two 1st's if it's Dallas or and divisional team.

Feel like you guys are really overestimating what we will actually get back.

Wasn’t the compensation for Gruden 2 firsts? I mean Payton is twice the coach of Gruden.

Depends which year it happens. If its only the past year of his contract, we get less

I feel like you are underestimating the value of one of the best coaches in football? If Gruden can demand all that then why can't Payton mean more? Explain that?
Since Payton joined the Saints (a 2-3 win team?) he immediately took them to the NFC Championship. Then from 06 until his suspension he had the most wins in the NFL except maybe the Patriots.. Now he had something like the 2nd or 3rd most wins among active coaches?
It absolutely should be 2 1sts and possibly a player minimum.

Parsons is worth less in that scenario as well because he's heading into being a FA soon.
But, I agree, the time to make the deal is now if you are going to make it. I wouldn't take much less a couple years down the road. I'd just force them both to wait.

It's not like trading a player where. The Saints hold all the cards in this. Sure he can sit out till 2027 and we will get nothing but we have nothing now. He's not coming back to the Saints.
We don't NEED to get anything in return for him, but we should get as much as anyone is willing to pay for have him coach in the next 5 years.
Sure sitting on him for 5 years may prevent him from coaching till 27, I guess screwing him, but with 5 years left on his NOLA contract he "Retires" if kinds screwing NOLA too.

Look I BELIEVE we should get a haul.
In reality I think we get some modest draft pick since we will have moved on with another coaching regime by that time.

Yesterday he said he was 2 years into the 5 year contract. So wouldn't that mean he's under contract for 22,23,24 seasons?
Also does anyone have clarification on whether or not he's under contract for the next 3 calendar years, or next 3 eligibible non-retired seasons? Like if say his contract expires at the end of the 24 season, and he wants to coach in 25. Is he free to go anywhere in 25, or would the remaining 3 years of his contract still be in play once he were to un-retire?

I say trade him.
Get value for him. I’d rather him coach somewhere else in a year and get something for him than see him coaching elsewhere a year or 2 later for nothing. Get some draft capital and go trade for a QB

What I think will happen is the Saints will do Payton a "solid" and take less compensation then they could get for him. Just a shitty gut feeling.

i would love to negotiate against you. "solids" have no place in any business dealings. unless maybe there is some mutual animosity involved. i do know of any on this case.
my completely uneducated guess is that the Saints ask for multiple 1s + random other picks + Player (parson as someone else mentioned), but settle on one #1 + PLAYER.
That is what i get from sitting here rubbing my crystal balls.

He’s free to start the ‘25 season
If he took a year off, he’d still be under contract for 2 seasons for whomever wanted to deal for him. Certainly would provide a return to the saints in that scenario
