I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about the trade down for Jaxson Hayes and NAW.

I think Griff would value a trade more with OKC like down to 12, dumping a contract, and picking up a future asset(s) rather than an extra pick in this draft.

Okc has so many future picks they literally can never use them all.

We basically did it last year. And tried to do it the year before.

Yes but I can’t see them going back to that model after the last one bombed

Only way I’d do it would be to have the deal in place waiting on final approval on draft night. If things broke our way, you pull the trigger.

Dyson/Sochan would be a dream scenario. But even if it was Adbaji/Eason I’d strongly consider it. You get two mature players who are ready to contribute now but also have a lot of upside for the future.

Getting two picks is attractive because there are two main holes on the roster: a back up guard who can score off the bench and has the size to defend; and a back up forward who can defend and be insurance if Zion remains injury prone.

I don’t think Hayes is going to be on the team in a year and if the Pels could come out of this draft with a long scoring guard and a good forward prospect .I’d be ecstatic. I think this draft is pretty deep with good if not great talent. A trade down might be the smart play…

Well I think the biggest difference is that moving back from 4 to 8 is exponentially different than 8 to 13.

If we had a top-4 pick this year, there's no way I'd consider trading down. Worst case is you get Sharpe or Ivey in that scenario.

There's a big conglomeration of guys around 7-15 who aren't very different

This team is in trade up mode, not trade down.

Stars to Superstars
Zion
Ingram
McCullom

Quality starters
Valanciunas
Jones

15+ minutes guys
Alvarado
Graham
Hayes
Murphy
Lewis
Nance

This team needs another quality starter player even if they come off the bench. Not two more 15+ minutes guys. The rotation shortens in the playoffs. The Pelicans already have 11 playoff guys. Team could use a Herro or Clarkson type bench impact player. Could be a starter but comes in and continues to pressure the opponents with high quality bench play.

if the pels trade out of 8, they wont do it until they are on the clock and know who is left on the board

Just take Daniels, Sochan and Dieng in that order

If all gone, trade down

We'll get someone really good at 8 guaranteed

Sharpe has so many unknowns and it sounds like he didn't do himself any favors at the combine.

quote:

Sharpe’s name continued to come up in conversation around the combine for various reasons: most of the NBA seems convinced he’ll come off the board in the first six or seven picks, it’s just unclear at this point which teams will actually be comfortable taking the plunge. Sharpe’s overall talent level is obvious, but there were mixed opinions on his pro day. Some teams were put off by the fact he spent much of his allotted time operating at a pretty casual speed. And while his time at Kentucky presumably helped behind the scenes, for better or worse, Sharpe will be the first lottery pick to make the jump to the NBA without logging a college or professional minute since Thon Maker in 2016.

LINK

If he doesn't impress Willie in the personal work out and falls to 8, that's when you should be able to get a decent trade back package.

If those three are gone at 8 then a stud is available.

Ivey or Sharpe would be there in that scenario. A trade down would be stupid.

There was nothing wrong with trading back to get Hayes, since that's who we wanted. Picking up NAW and Didi as well was a good move.

There was everything wrong with our scouting of Jaxson Hayes and our failure to see the character flaws and the lack of dedication and love of the game of basketball.

Trading up or trading back depends entirely on who we pick and how they turn out. It worked out great last year, trading back and still getting TM3.

Either way, I recognize that the trade has a certain value in the abstract, but it's really hard to separate that from the real-world connection of picks with actual players.

trading down rarely ever works out for the team trading down.

The only way i'm ok with trading down is if there is some other benefit to it, like unloading a contract (which i dont' think needs to be done), or getting a proven player back, like Alec Burks or Kevin Huerter.

going from 8 to get 13 and 15 would be a stupid decision that has proven to not work way more often than not.
