is not hiring another former magic coach too much to ask?

I am totally perplexed by the Vaughn love from Griffin. He apparently really liked him last year.

The guy...did not do well in Orlando. That's not the be all and end all. Plenty of guys don't do well in their first HC job and do well in future jobs, especially in a league so talent dependent. But it seems like such a tired and underwhelming hire.

Yeah to be fair Frank Vogel went 54-110 in two seasons in Orlando. He's 344-230 with Indiana and LA. Some of those Orlando teams post Dwight have just been terrible.

It sounds like Vaughn has a lot of respect from players around the league and I'm sure that's driving his being interviewed. To be clear I don't think he should be a frontrunner and there's better options available. Hopefully this is just due diligence.

He may be a great coach.

I said repeatedly last year that I wanted Griffin to make an "inspired" hire. Look for greatness in someone that hasn't had the chance yet, that is innovative, etc.

And then he hired the literal exact opposite of "inspired".

Vaughn sort of feels like that, although not nearly as bad as SVG.

I'd prefer to give someone like Lee a shot, or Billups, Weaver, etc.

I wonder if Holiday gave the Pels some insight on Charles Lee from a player perspective? He would be a good source of info for them and they appeared to have a good relationship after Jrue was traded.

Yeah agreed. Fair or unfair, hiring someone who hasn't already failed as a HC is going to be more exciting and intriguing to the fanbase. Someone like Lee or Udoka offers only possibilities without hard evidence of coaching failure to point to.

I say keep up with the trend of hiring former players with no coaching experience and bring in rondo when the clips lose.

Well, you never know if Vaughn learned from his previous HC in Orlando and can translate that into success like Monty Williams for example.

He was HC 6 years ago with a dreadful team. I'm not saying he will be successful at his next stop, but his Magic experience shouldn't define him as an "uninspired" hire. Nets fans and players love him.

That said, I'm drinking the Lee Kool-Aid. But, I wouldn't view a Vaughn hire as lazy/uninspired.

I'm all in on Will Weaver.
Been an assistant for a while, coached 1 year in the G-League and 1 year in Australia and had the best record for both of them, losing in the finals in each, sort of since they bowed out in Australia due to Covid.

I do not want Vaughn. His time in Orlando speaks for itself. And the roster wasn't that bad, at least not bad enough to keep winning under 25 games.

I wouldn't object to Charles Lee, but i'd rather someone with more coaching experience, even if it's just assistant coaching experience.

I wouldn't object to Darvin Ham or Udoka either.

SO that's the 4 i'd like to see
Weaver
Ham
Udoka
Lee

I can't see them hiring a genius type as HC. Leader/motivator seems to be what they need most. Weaver as lead assistant would make sense though.

I agree, I do not think it is going to be Weaver.

While everything I read about Weaver makes me really want him on staff, whomever we hire is already going to have two assistants forced on him (Weatherspoon and Vinson). I'd rather he make the choice on the rest of his staff.

My biggest fear with Vaughn is his eerily similar philosophy to SVG on the defensive end. And his offensive schemes have been pretty basic. If we were an established offense, I'd be all for it but right now I probably prefer a guy with some modern basketball offensive philosophies.

Langdon is very familair with Vaughn. They were in San Antonio and Brooklyn together post playing days. Could be throwing his guy a bone to boost his value, or may just believe he is a good coach

Pelicans would have been better suited firing Gentry at some point during Zion’s first season and rolling with Chris Finch. I know Gentry had unforeseen circumstances with injuries and whatnot, but it was pretty clear the team was not progressing the way they should even without Zion.

It would have been interesting to see what the team could have done with Finch going into the bubble and this season.

We had a top 10 defense post ASB, so that's not a bad thing.

The new coach just needs to call Zion/BI P&R's and have everyone else sit at the 3 point line and wait for a kickout.

I’ll be pretty upset if we hire Vaughn. He was a dumpster fire in Orlando
