Phoenix Suns minority owner Jahm Najafi, who owns the second-largest stake in the team behind majority owner Robert Sarver, just released a statement.

In it, Najafi writes, in part:

"I am calling for the resignation of Robert Sarver."

They appear to have a board of directors, so probably that.

As noted elsewhere, how weird is it that every team CP3 has played for, outside the Thunder, has changed ownership or had an owner suspended during his time there?

This was only a matter of time. Sarver was a piece of shite, but no one cared because the Suns were bad. Now that they’re good, the league is going to force this sale.

I just read an article from January on this. Sarver only owns about 35% of the team. The 2nd guy is building a group to owst him. There are a bunch of minority owners, but it seems like just 4 primary ones.

This is from January:
LINK /

quote:

“His experience of being an Iranian immigrant in the ’70s and being the target of racial slurs himself is why he’s so personally invested in these issues,” says Najafi’s Phoenix-based publicist, Alissa Manzoeillo (Najafi declined to comment). “This isn’t a flyby thing for him.”

quote:

The sight of Kaepernick rubbing shoulders with Najafi so soon after the allegations sparked immediate speculation that the team’s second-largest owner was purposefully setting himself apart from Sarver – and possibly making a play for control of the team.

quote:

Since Sarver owns less than half of the team, a majority of co-owners could vote for him to step down, but making that happen could be difficult. ESPN’s report stated that certain minority owners had previously explored having Sarver removed on other grounds (the report did not name the reason), but found “Sarver’s contract effectively prevented him from being removed absent serious criminal behavior or similarly egregious conduct.”

The conclusion of the NBA’s investigation – no timetable has been given – could bring other mutineers out of the hardwood if hard evidence of that “egregious conduct” emerges.

as others have said, the rest of the ownership group could (if they have the money) force a sale of sarvers stake at market value. A big money partnership like that always has conduct clauses.

he could fight it and probably would. It would take several of the other 29 to back the effort though and that hasn’t happened. We will see

One thing is for sure the players aren’t going to let this go

NBA Twitter is mad at Silver for not doing more, but the league getting rid of an owner is messy and possibly bad for business with private things getting made public. It feels like Silver loaded a gun and gave it to someone that would do the right thing. Internal ousting of Sarver is way better for the league. Just like how they got Sterling's wife to push through a sale of the Clippers.

Statement from PayPal, a sponsor of the Phoenix Suns, reads, in part:

"In light of the findings of the NBA's investigation, we will not renew our sponsorship should Robert Sarver remain involved with the Suns organization, after serving his suspension."

Unfortunately, it will likely be up to sponsors, minority owners, the media and even the players to do the league office’s dirty work from here, especially given the absence of smoking-gun audio. But it’s still easy to imagine how conditions could make a Sarver return impossible. What advertiser is going to associate its brand with Sarver’s Suns 12 months from now? How many fans will think twice about buying tickets? What about the players?

That's fine, they can buy him out, at market value. What's the going rate for an NBA team nowadays?
