Thats what I was wondering too. But he does play at the same position as their best player and so he might not be a huge priority. They wanted to sign Caleb Martin and needed the cap space but I would have thought they could have at least gotten a 2nd for him.

He got played off the floor in the playoffs, making him expendable to them.
I could give a frick about the playoffs at the second, I just want the payers to make it through the season before we find a more permanent solution.

I'll admit i'm just looking at the stats and haven't dug deep into this. But i'm wondering if he just had a bad series or if he is someone whose play style doesn't translate over to the playoffs similar to a Gobert or Jonas. He seems more versatile and able to play in space than the bigger centers.
He also played a decent bit the previous year in the playoffs and his stats were much better. In the two games he started he put up a double double in each. His per 36 numbers were 11.8 pts, 13.8 rbs, 1 blk, and 1 stl while shooting 58%. I think its just hard to get a true evaluation on him because he backs up one of the top two centers in the NBA and Philly played them very little together.

Yeah, after looking into it, it appears to be a couple things. In order to sign Martin, a likely starter for them, they had to cut Reed. It’s much more important to have a starting wing than a backup to your superstar who is going to play 30+ MPG anyway. And, also it appears that he had a -54 on/off versus the Knicks. Which obviously 1 series doesn’t determine a player’s worth, but he seems more like a backup option.

He is a good backup at the least and can play 4-5 in the regular season. I think he may be similar to Adams and JV to where he is matchup dependent for the playoffs.
Posted on 7/7/24 at 12:06 pm to teke184
Agreed. I think at a minimum he’s a good backup but I would like to see what he can do without Embiid stifling his development. Especially with the type of offense we could have around him. If we’re unable to trade Ingram and get a better starting center then he could play with 4 guys that all can create for him. Even if we don’t see him as a full time starting center I could see his value increasing with increased minutes and the offense that we’re putting together. Then maybe flip him and a pick for a different center.

So, it would seem that the options still in play are:
1) WCJ
2) Kessler
3) Reed
4) Theis
Right? There aren't any recent rumors about anyone else that I've missed, correct?

Sign Paul reed
Pay the 2 1sts for kessler
Go into the season trying to figure it out, if you can't your return will resemble what siakam got anyway for Ingram.
Best case, you end up a top 4 seed.

Just curious can we do all this and stay under the tax this season?
To top it off how does keeping Ingram affect Trey negotiations? In essence, he’s going to be losing minutes with the amount of wings we have in the rotation. And to top it off, whats more important to have- to build chemistry and progress in the season or just trying to build up BI trade value? Could both be done sure. But we cant afford all these guys.

Is it Ayton or Robert Williams? I feel like blazers would trade Williams before Ayton.

No. The only way to stay under the tax is to fill it out with rookie minimums. The roster is at 11 with Missi and $3.3 million away from the tax. To get to the required 14 man roster even with vet minimums would put you over. 3 more rookie minimums would just squeeze in but then you have no viable center.
Hawkins for Kessler saves you about $1.5 million so maybe you can do that and Reed on a minimum. But I think more likely you have to plan on trading BI or CJ and taking less money back at some point this season. Either that or actually pay the tax.

If I remember right vet mind don’t put you over the cap. Unless you are already over.

Not quite. Vet minimums are subsidized for more than 2 years of service For reference the 2 YOS minimum is $2 million. A 10 year vet makes $3.3 on the minimum. Also, there's a wrinkle that's new to me when I looked it up just now that says you can't even make it work with rookie minimums.
quote:
The NBA reimburses teams for the amount over the two YOS veteran minimum, provided the contract is a one-year minimum deal. In those cases, the player will count against the cap and tax at the two YOS minimum, which would also be their outgoing salary in trade. Additionally, for non-drafted players with 0-1 YOS, the tax hit is the 2 YOS minimum.

So there is no avoiding the tax without trading current players for cheaper players.

We will not be a tax team. So somebody is getting moved..

Considering we’ve never paid the tax in the history of our franchise, most potential BI partners likely are betting on us trading him which in turn doesn’t help with Griffin’s leverage in trade talks.

But isn't the tax only based on the last day? So we can go over it now and make a decision mid year. Teams know it now, it doesn't change anything. Say we contend it's worth to go into it. It's not we can move in later.

Griff came out and said they will never be an Apron team. He didn't say they wouldn't be a tax team and I think that was significant because as misleading and deceptive as Griff can be, he usually chooses his words very carefully and rarely actually lies.
I'm sure his goal is to trade BI and avoid the tax, but there's a timeline where they make a move like Hawkins for Kessler, and add a solid backup center and round out the roster cheap enough to just dip your toe in the tax, and that team out talents everyone into being a top 4 seed.
Its not sustainable going forward with the raises everyone would get soon, but it could be an interesting one year shot when there isn't a clear favorite. This would be the top 8 on this hypothetical team.
Zion
Murray
BI
Trey
Herb
CJ
Kessler
Reed
You have 7 starting caliber players, 3 players that have made an All Star team, 3 more that are fringe All Star caliber. As clunky as the fit and skill overlap might be, that still seems like a recipe for success in the playoffs when the standard playbook includes taking away your best options and daring the weakest player on the floor to beat you.

Yeah but then you HAVE to trade him and have absolutely no leverage. I highly doubt with that roster we would be a top 3 team in west- which would be the only way Gayle says ok to tax.
Take for example how we dumped devonte by attaching all our second round picks just to avoid tax at deadline.

We’ve seen talented clunky fits fail miserably in playoffs though. Take Suns or even Clippers. Dipping your toes in the tax for a team thats an illfitting roster and thats not long term doesn’t make much sense to me. If its one year shot they need to be title contenders- I dont see that with this roster.
