Okay, I’m just going to say one thing...I don’t care if Elfrid Payton grew up in the SKC and was raised by the ushers, I do not like the signing. Don’t retweet this at me when he has a 20 point game. At the end of the season, if I’m wrong, I’ll eat the crow.

Who TF is David grub and why is this dude popping up on my Pels Twitter the past few weeks

I will @ him all year fwiw

I have no clue why he hates Payton so much.

He does the Bird Calls podcast. I actually asked about Payton possibly coming here for cheap and being a backup to rondo on their podcast last week. He bashed Payton for a bit and say there’s no way The Pels would be interested. Payton isn’t a great player but I really don’t understand the hate for this, especially if this is super cheap

Stats, particularly some advanced ones.

None of these guys watch Payton. Not like they sat down and watched him play 30 games last year.

They look at stats and 98% of their evaluation comes from that. And many of his advanced stats are poor. As a starter. On bad teams. With no direction.

He will be asked to be a backup on a good team. To play a very specific role. Might he still not move the needle? Very possible. But good writers and analysts think about context. Bad ones just show you a bunch of numbers of guys they've never watched.

You are looking at simple stats. They are looking at on-off, defensive rating, real plus minus and other advanced stats.

What’s his potential defensively? I’m sure it’s been hard to show what he can do on such bad teams.

He has good length and athleticism.

He won the 2014 Lefty Driesell award for the top defensive player in the nation his junior year in college. FWIW AD won that award in 2012

Payton is exactly the type of player we need. Young (only 23), athletic, can drive and break down the defense, sets up his teammates well, and most importantly plays with pace

No one expects or wants him to be the starter, but as a backup and as a guy that learns under Rondo, this is a good fit for us

Agreed, he's still young. I think the ideal scenario is that he can maybe learn from Rondo/Erman and can basically be our younger Rondo once Rondo retires.

The Weekend could show up for a press conference, and nobody would know the difference.

Sources tell me Elfrid Payton’s one year deal with the Pelicans is worth more than the veteran minimum.

Still don’t have an exact price, but it’s likely to fit under the bi-annual exception (less than $3.5 million).

The BAE reference is interesting because that hard caps you. But we thought the same thing about Rondo last year. It took forever to get the exact details of his deal because what exception they used was dependent on other moves they did or didn't make.

We know that Rondo has an offer, has it been mentioned (or is it just assumed) that his offer is the non-bird 3.9 mil, possibly 2/8 (also non-bird)?
