We havent' seen any details but with Rondo the Pels just had very limited options so it's easy to assume with a high degree of confidence.

Either the Pels first move of FA was to give a bench player the BAE and hardcap themselves, very unlikely, or they gave Payton part of the Taxpayer MLE. If they gave Payton part of the MLE then giving Rondo a 20% raise with Non Bird Rights is the only move they can make unless the team dumps enough salary to use the full MLE. So I'd bet Rondo has a 2/$8 offer with the 2nd year being a player option.

Right, that was my thinking. If they paid more than vet's min, then they either have the BAE or the TMLE. If they used the BAE for Payton, then they could use the TLME for Rondo, but otherwise it's 2/8 for Rondo at best.

I don't see any way (outside of a trade) that the Pels get above the tax line at the beginning of the season. The Cousins' contract won't put them there, IMO.

Payton is exactly the type of player we need. Young (only 23), athletic, can drive and break down the defense, sets up his teammates well, and most importantly plays with pace

Payton can drive and get to the basket as well as anyone. (He just struggles shooting)
I’m thinking lobs to AD all day

Seems like a definite upgrade over last year's backup PG, Jameer Nelson.

I'm down to see what Payton can contribute on a playoff team.

He is a $2.7M backup PG. He is going to have holes in his game. If he can get slightly better at shooting from the perimeter (taking smarter shots, haircut) and get back to being well above average at getting to the rim and finishing, then he is a huge bargain even if he plays questionable defense.
