He's exactly what we need in a backup PG. A distributor who you can pair with Jrue. Not having a Rondo replacement was one of our most obvious weaknesses come playoff time right next to having no SF.

Payton is also another big guard, at 6'4. I'm assume no he can defend a few positions, which is a trait Erman wants in his players.

I think he can defend 1 and 2 and maybe some 3, but he's not Jrue's level (not many are)

Watching some YouTube highlights, Payton looks big out there and plays big too. 6'4" with a 6'8" wingspan. Moves a little rigid/robotic sometimes, streaky shooter, but good passer, has vision, works angles a little bit, rim finisher. Tale of the tape says there's a lot to like. VERY PROBABLE good player bad team situation at hand

What else are we going to discuss? Our favorite colors?

People forget what an abomination regular season Rondo was in game 1-70 pretty easily it seems. It would be really nice to not have to squeak into the playoffs again this year. I really like this signing for what it is. A competent backup PG who can be good enough occasionally so those Rondo disappearing acts don’t cost us. He won’t save us, but I could see him playing up closer to his potential under this staff and the tutelage of Rondo.

Payton’s defensive ability is more myth based on potential that hasn’t been reached, I reckon. He’s been hammered for his defense the last year or two

Yeah. No one should overrate this move. He is what he is.

At the same rate, we are talking about a guy not making a lot of money in a backup role. He fills a need. I'm good with it.

If Elfrid and Rajon are on the court at the same time, they might just cancel the NBA though

I read it. Again, I'm for this move, we needed another ball handler. I'm just not going to make more of it than what it is.

If he proves that he's capable of a bigger role, then that's a huge bonus.

That must never happen. Ever.

don't shite talk Rondo. Pels were uncanny good when he played. 41-24 reg season, 5-4 postseason. Rondo was the real glue

Rondo had some rough stretches in the reg season.

Thanks for proving my point about how easy it is for people to forget his regular season play.

Payton's Orlando highlights from his rookie year alongside Oladipo show some real flashes of brilliance. In hindsight, 'Dipo is the only All-NBA player he's ever played with. The two as a duo played off each other well, but obviously couldn't space the floor together as a backcourt. I find that encouraging bc Jrue CAN space the floor and is a willing cutter/off the ball mover. Also, noticed a number of nice lob dunk passes to Dwayne Dedmon. If AD really is better than Dedmon, EP should be able to make AD look just as nice.

I'm told the Pelicans brass, including coach Alvin Gentry, pitched Payton at the team's practice facility late last night. He obviously liked what he heard.
