I think that has alot to do with familiar faces. For over a decade the Pels have rotated mediocre mid roster players that we have kept for a while. Etwuan, Miller, Frank Jackson, etc. Those players never really impacted much. We also had guys like Asik, Tyreke, Gordon etc. None of those guys have been vital to a rebuild or championship run on our roster. Our roster design now is more make or break for those types of players. In other words those guys were viewed as solid roster depth in the past and now those spots are more of auditions for the best fit available. That mentality change right there shows how much better ran and designed our rosters will be.

It's okay to be less deep if the top end talent improves.

Exactly. Now that the top half is better we can plug and fit the other half. We also have plenty of leeway to make moves and add depth with all of our picks and how our contracts are set. We aren't stuck with Hill/ Asik contracts and we don't even have to be stuck with or roll with Moore/ Miller level contracts anymore. It can be steady improvement from here forward.

I believe just a healthy Favors last year even with Zion injury and we are easily the 8th seed.

Adams RARELY misses any games, so just swapping him for Favors is a net +.

Healthy, I believe we will be in the playoffs, especially if Houston blows it up.

Bell had his contract guaranteed and was sent to the Lakers unless they waived him already?

It was a partial guarantee, the Lakers are waiving and stretching him.

They can't afford to keep him, they are right up against the hard cap

Ok didn’t see that that happened. Yeah wouldn’t mind Bell. Remember liking him when he came out. Can jump out of a gym.

No bubble last year and we are either 8th or close to it too.

Going into the bubble screwed as far as player attitudes, conditioning, and schedule since we went from having a lot of easy games left and Memphis being up shite creek to a five game schedule with Zion all screwed up.

But how deep do you need your roster to be? Injuries aside, you need your core 8 for the playoffs, and then 2 more during the season.

I think we have 10 pretty good players, 8 for sure. At the very least we are 2 deep at every position.

Guards
Bledsoe, Lewis
Ball, NAW, Reddick

Forwards
Ingram, Hart
Zion, Melli

Centers
Adams, Pogo, Hernangomez

5 guards, 4 forwards, and 3 centers.

That looks like pretty good depth to me.

It FEELS less deep than last year for some reason to me, but that could just be being a prisoner of the moment.
I don't feel this at all.

We're replacing Favors with Stevens and Jrue with Bledsoe in terms of minutes.

After that, everyone else that we are replacing are replacement level players.

Hopefully Zion plays a full season, that should help in regards to depth. Kenrich didn't play after Zion came back, so Zion will replace his minutes. Moore's minutes go to NAW. Okafor's minutes go to Hayes or Hernangomez.

The only potential downgrade I really see is Moore for NAW, but I think NAW will be better this season.

The only real minutes that I didn't list were Frank's minutes, and I'm pretty sure we could bring him back if we wanted.

ETA: if we really need 5th guard minutes, we could get those from Lewis (to replace Frank's "production").

Just looking up and down the roster, I'm not really concerned with replacing any of the minutes that we've lost from last season, and we still have 2 (or 3) spots to fill.

Phoenix won 26 games before the bubble. 26! And their best player turns 36 in May. This is one of those sure to disappoint scenarios.

Who do you consider to be Phoenix’s best player?

Their 2nd best player BTW, who will turn 36 was not on the roster last year.. He was the #1 player on a team that went 44-28 with the 5 seed..

Come on now, let’s not play naive.

I am sure people will argue that Booker is their best player, and maybe he will be. But there is a reason this team has been terrible with Booker, and everyone considers them contenders with CP3. Paul makes any team he is on much better. But a small guard at 35 with his injury history, and on that contract of course, doesn’t exactly scream good things. Everyone will be excited and will boast about the Suns, right up until they actually start playing basketball games.

For the 5th veteran guard, we need to go get Reggie Jackson.

Should be had on a minimum, and he's familiar with SVG from their time in Detroit.

Bell
Jackson
RHJ

Those would the 3 targets i would shoot for on minimum deals to round out the roster.

Doesn't Reggie Jackson have one of the shittiest attitudes in the NBA?

Yeah I could be wrong, but my understanding of Jackson is that he is one of the biggest assholes in the league (and not in a good way), and difficult to deal with.

At this point you go with culture setters or you take a chance on insane talent.

Yeah, the issue with guys like RHJ, Roberson, Jackson, etc... is that they may not come here if they aren't going to be getting minutes. I think those guys are all looking at vet min deals, so they are more likely to go somewhere that they actually have a chance at consistent minutes, which is something that we can't really guarantee. I do think someone like Delly may come, knowing that he won't necessarily get minutes.
