If we weren’t some other team would have already given him an offer sheet to sign.

Portland having a stellar off season.

WHat has Portland done that was stellar?
They swapped out Ariza for Covington. Ariza didn't play in the playoffs, but Gary Trent basically took his place and did pretty good. So i dont' see how they really got better here. This will be Covington's 4th team in 3 years. If he was really good, he wouldn't be getting moved around so much.
They got Kanter to replace WHiteside.
Resigned Hood and got Derrick Jones.

All they really did was add Hood and Jones. They are still going to be a terrible defensive team, as they have always been, which is the root of their problem.
Last year they were bottom 5 defensively, and they did nothing last year, finishing below .500.
the 2 years before that they were top 10 defensively, won 49 and 53 games and they made the WCF, and got embarrassed by Jrue.
Year before those 2 they were bottom 5 defensively again and finished with a 41-41 record.

They've done much of nothing, other than the 2 years they actually played defense, and they did nothing this year to get better defensively. yes Covington is a good defender, but all he did was replace Ariza, who was giving them 30+ minutes a night before Covid. While Whiteside is known to not be a great defender overall, he's still one of the best rim protectors in the league, and Kanter is a horrible defender.

They need to let go of McCollum and bring in some defensive help. If they weren't trying to get Jrue, then they are stupid, b/c that's what they needed next to Lillard.

I don't know I just don't find the current roster very inspiring for some reason and OKC built that roster through the draft with top 5 picks 3 years in a row and got lucky drafting 3 players who all ended up winning MVP during their career lol.

We're building the right way. We have two young guys with All NBA potential, and a ton of future assets. We're putting solid vets around the 2 young stars, that's how you should build. There's no point in rushing the build when BI and Zion aren't ready yet.

based on what tatum and mitchell signed, it will be 4 plus a player option. if the option is declined he/they can sign a 35% max after 4 years

I guess our plan at this point is to wait it out a bit and see which two veterans are desperate and will sign for the vet minimum. Probably guys like Batum that don't have an option with a contender on the minimum.

And leave it at 14 roster spots. No way we go into the tax.

If we go into tax now doesn’t mean we pay it by end of the season, right? Or other way around even. I think we would still have our MLE to use on the buyout market if we are making a playoff push.

Come on now. It’s crazy to me how much benefit of the doubt people give other teams as compared to our own.

Lillard and McCollum are both 30 and on massive deals. They are going all in right now because they know any moment their small guards are going to be negative assets.

Dallas has Luka and more power to them. But Porz is hurt and essentially has been a let down. And their first round picks are owed to the Knicks.

We were better than Memphis last year in my and many’s opinion, Jaren is hurt, and we didn’t have Zion most of the year.

Utah just maxed Donovan Mitchell and may be parting with Gobert in the near future because of it.

Phoenix won 26 games before the bubble. 26! And their best player turns 36 in May. This is one of those sure to disappoint scenarios.

And while Denver is very good, they lost Grant and Craig and traded away a future first for RJ Hampton who, I’m sorry, just isn’t very good IMO.

All these teams have chances to do some good things this year and in the future. But Zion had 29 points and 8 rebounds per 36 on over 58% from the field as a 19 year old coming off knee surgery. Brandon Ingram was an all star. We have more future assets than any team not named OKC. We’re good here. Sit back and enjoy.

You have to be below the tax line before the end of the season I believe.

So I guess in theory we could go over now and then make a salary clearing move at the deadline. But that is risky and a team may make us attach value to it knowing we want to get below the line.

There's no chance a team like us should be paying the tax though with all of the repeater penalties.

In 3 years when Zion and BI are on Maxes and we are making WCF runs, yeah.

The tax is calculated at the end of the season. So, technically we could go into the tax right now and make a trade at the deadline to get under the tax. It's a risky proposition though, as you may end up having to tie assets to a contract to get off of it at the deadline. I think they will probably just stay under, but obviously I could be wrong there.

Aren’t there tax breaks this season? Also, even if we are a tax team this season I struggle to see how we are one next season unless we make a huge uneven trade for a star. We will have a ton of cap space.

True, but what's the point in going into the tax to attempt to battle for the 10th seed? Sure, we all want to get into the playoffs, but I doubt there is anyone out there that thinks we're actually competing for a championship this season.

Lowe likes the Dotson deal for Cavs

The Knicks disinterest in Dotson was puzzling. Like the Cavs taking a flier. Dotson can shoot 3s off movement, and he moves *fast* off the ball.

I guess it depends...do we go into the tax to get the right number of expirings to make a deal for the right guy plus have our exceptions? I think there is some roster flexibility there if, say, Beal comes available at this year's deadline. I'm not saying that'll happen or if that is even sound strategy...I think it all depends on how things go this season...the west is a bit more open than we think...I'm entirely sold on the Suns yet, Rockets are imploding, OKC took a step back...Sacramento seems like they are getting worse...

I don't think we make a "big" move to bring in a possible 3rd star for another couple years, I could be wrong though depending upon how good Ingram and Zion look this season.

I think people are starting to under value our roster honestly. People are acting like we got worse from last year. Eric Bledsoe in a good system can be about 80-90% as valuable as Jrue. I think people are really underestimating the impact Adams should have on our team compared to Favors. Adams gives us both better defense and offense than Favors. What really confuses me is people are acting like BI, Zion, Lonzo, and Hart will all play the same as last year and will not take a step forward. If Lonzo and JJ become a force at SG our roster should really come together. This is all without the impact Lewis could have if the kid is legit.

If we had Adams instead of Favors last year we might have easily been a 6 or 7 seed. Now we have BI and Zion with a real off season and with trainers.

It FEELS less deep than last year for some reason to me, but that could just be being a prisoner of the moment.

We should go after Jordan Bell as a Zion backup. Should come on a minimum deal, has good experience. I don't see much of anyone else available.

I thought the team last year was a 5-6 seed and would make noise. I was way off. The team just never clicked and Zion got hurt. This year, I'm more waiting to see. It all hinges on Zion and the team goes as he goes. Outside of him, we have nothing that sets us apart. I really hope that Ingram is everything people think he is, its on him to bust out this year..

I was with you until this part. He’s already accomplished that last year.
