There's lots of talent out there, there's just very few good songs and even less good albums. I listened to a bit of EJ's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road the other day. Nothing today even comes close and it wasn't necessarily the best of it's time.

It’s so true. With most new music I feel like I am forcing myself to like it.

I sort of blame the way the music scene has evolved from club acts to stadiums and festivals. There is just not as much energy behind it. Young people want their picture to post they don’t want their face melted.

Music production, just like movie production, has been neutered by tech. Things being able to be “fixed” after recording robs creativity

That and for whatever reason we have moved away from showcasing rare talent. People are still touring from 50 years ago because they are incredible pianists, guitarists and singers.

At the end of the day, you hate the feeling that I have heard every song I’m ever going to like. I want to branch out and do hear some thing I like, but finding a band that I can listen to an entire album hasn’t happened in over 10 years.

The people that say want to be back in high school/college. Also, they don’t want to look for anything.

Are you unaware of bands such as:

I have literally never heard of any of those bands.

not that long ago, you didn't have to look. It was everywhere.
no searching whatsoever. It just came on the radio.

a new song came out, and it played on the radio. If you liked it, you went buy the album and heard the rest of that band's music.

everything switching to streaming ruined how people discover music.
if you don't already know a band's name, you're likely to never stumble upon them.

and if every time you click on "what's new" it sucks arse, eventually you're going to quit clicking on it and you won't find it when something actually good comes up.

I get a Discover Weekly from Spotify that is tailored to my musical tastes every Monday, and I discover a lot of new music that way.

I'm in my mid 40s and my music taste is constantly growing. I still enjoy most of what I listened to as a teenager but I'm finding new stuff all the time I would have never listened to back then. Maybe I'm just different but finding new music is still exciting for me.

I'm 62, been hearing that sort of thing since I was a preteen. It is usually a statement that no one is making new music that is stylistically what I like.

Most of us get comfortable and prefer to stay in that spot. know I do it a lot. When I force myself to actually listen to newer music I always find some unexpected gems. But I also usually circle back to my comfort zone. Pitfalls of getting old, I think.

Not necessarily. I think it's just that the "better" original music these days isn't what's spoon fed to us. In the past "album rock" was all over the radio. Now you have to wade past all the pop trash to get to the stuff that's creative. I realize it's all at our fingertips on our phones/computers, but we just have to dig.

I am still catching up to old music that I like and never listened to in the past. New York Dolls, Steel Pulse. Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers, Megadeath and Motörhead, Pantera, Moe Bandy, Sam Cooke, Buck Owens and a few others. I’m not saying I never heard a song or two from each of them and liked them but I just never explored their stuff any deeper than their biggest hit song.

As far as newer stuff I like Dirty Honey, The Cold Stares, Mac Saturn, The Struts, GVF, Stick Figure, The Elovaters, The Tesky Brothers.

Cant stand any of the newer country music except Sturgill Simpson. He reminds me of Waylon Jennings and sounds like authentic 70s era country.

If you like lo-fi/indie I can't recommend David Dean Burkhart's YouTube channel enough. It has nothing but the newest releases, and I've discovered a lot of artists that way over the years. Not every song is my style, but the good thing about this over the radio is the next song is just a click away. Compact Cassette is his Spotify channel. Not updated as frequently as the YouTube, which has new songs every day.

I second whoever rec'd Caroline Rose. She has some great stuff. Some I've been digging a lot recently:

R Missing
HighSchool
PRESSYES
A Beacon School
Butter Bath
Blondshell

My musical taste is still growing, but it is usually something older. Like in the last two years I’ve gotten much more into early disco and more recently R&B like Stax type stuff.

I’m really not bored with music, it’s really quite opposite, so I don’t necessarily feel compelled to find much new. I’ve always been someone that listens to things over and over.

Admittedly, I am biased toward guitar driven music, and I am not getting out to live shows. Those things are limiting.

Nevertheless, even the stuff by artists that I liked what they were putting out 10 years ago, I find a bit boring and just don’t hear much with staying power. I feel the same with movies and tv.

If you let Spotify know what music you like they create that playlist for you. I like to go for an hour bike ride on Monday after work while listening to it. I green check the songs i like and then form new playlists. Kind of builds on itself with their algorithms.

I have seen no one say that. Saying that the state of current music is shite is not the same as saying there is no good music being made.

A lot of reasons for this.
- People are definitely more connected to music from youth. The way we are influenced changes. What parents like their kid's music? I'm too distracted now to connect to new music.
- everything has been done already. IMO, it's got to be harder for artists to come up with original stuff.
- there is good music out there, but it just doesn't seem very ground breaking exciting
