Catchy tune, straight up dark lyrics.
Foster the People - "Pumped Up Kicks"
Yep. This is the song that immediately came to mind when I saw this thread.

A few songs by They Might Be Giants: They'll Need A Crane from Lincoln, I've Got A Match from Lincoln, and Narrow Your Eyes from Apollo 18.

Yeah, it is really more of a protest song when you read the lyrics. I have heard Springsteen do acoustic versions of the song, the mood of the song is a lot more depressing

The Las
"There She Goes"
There she goes
There she goes again
Racing thru' my brain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she blows
There she blows again
Pulsing thru' my vein
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she goes, there she goes again
She calls my name, pulls my train
No-one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she goes
There she goes again
Chasing down my lane
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
"There She Goes"
There she goes
There she goes again
Racing thru' my brain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she blows

Hey Ya is a perfect example, imo. The first half is basically about a relationship falling apart. Then at the end, he says people don't want to dwell on something like that..."Y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance" while the second half of the song takes over.

Also plenty of songs from The Avett Brothers 'The Carpenter' album.

Catchy tune with a pessimistic, depressing view of the state of British industry in the early 80s.

"Two men say they're Jesus....one of 'em must be wrong..."

Literally the entirety of Linken Park’s last album, especially “Heavy”. Those lyrics were absolutely forshadowing Chester Bennington’s suicide just a few months after the album debued to universal disdain by long time Linken Park fans. In hindsight, the album makes so much more sense.

Pete Townshend in the late 70s, dealing with Keith Moon's death, a dual addiction to heroin and booze, and the disintegration of his marriage....with a shout out to Jesus. Priceless.
Relentlessly caustic lyrics to a snappy beat.

The Gaslight Anthem "The '59 Sound" is a personal favorite and a good one.
LINK
It's a song about friends dying young, but the music isn't like that.

Not much more depressing than male prostitution (and abuse) to pay for drug addiction...so, I'd go with Hash Pipe - Weezer
