I remember in an interview, Bono said fans would come up to them and tell them they played One at their wedding. And he was like great, it’s really a song about breaking up.

On that note, I've heard the Police's "Every Breath You Take" at weddings and I always wonder if the couple knows it's more about stalking someone.

My cousin played Ben Folds Five's "Brick" at his reception. I asked after if they knew it was about getting an abortion and the response was "it's still a good song."

In My Time of Dying
Plant and Page remake of the old Blind Willie Johnson gospel classic.

Then, there is Hand of Doom by the masters of reality, Osborne and Iommi...
Check that,

Help! - The Beatles

Seasons in The Sun - Terry Jack (not only depressing lyrics but one of the worst songs ever)

Speaking of The Beatles, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" is kind of an upbeat tune about a serial killer.

"Bang, bang Maxwell's silver hammer came down on her head. Bang, bang Maxwell's silver hammer made sure she was dead."

I thought about Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Every Breath You Take but decided not to include them. Maxwell is more of a tongue in cheek novelty song like Yellow Submarine. The lyrics come across as more silly than depressing or macabre. With EBYT the bass line makes the music sound more ominous than upbeat to my ears.

Musically, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" reminds me of "Rag Time" or turn of the century "Gay 90s." Probably a bad comparison.
The lyrics are silly.

But I agree with you on EBYT....mood of the music matches the tone set in the lyrics, IMO.

5:15 is pretty damned depressing, as well.

Temperance Movement - Only Friend.

Great song by a band that should be a lot more well known.

Saves the day had a song that fit this perfectly. At your funeral, might have been the name or something along those lines.

The Smiths' "Rusholme Ruffians" begins fairly upbeat musically, but Morrissey then delivers a thoroughly depressing story of violence, robbery, contemplative suicide and loneliness

You can almost pick any Smiths song and it fits what this thread is looking for.

Elvis Costello's "Veronica," has a pleasant melody, but the song is about an older woman suffering from Alzheimers.

"These days I'm afraid she's not even sure that her name is Veronica."

The music is not upbeat though, the tone fits the lyrics, it’s a depressing song all the way including being horrible

I enjoy this version but it really does not capture the meaning at all. Some of my favorite lyrics ever. Townes throws in some upbeat phrases but the meanings are the opposite. "When the wind don't blow in Amarillo" = when hell freezes over. So the answer to this:

"Shall I cast my dreams
Upon your love, babe
And lie beneath
The laughter of your eyes?"

is "never gonna happen".
