People still rating 25yr old extinct bands are weirdo

I loved nirvana in high school But they haven't come up in a casual conversation with friends in probably a decade probably for me

And btw, I'd venture to say most blacks probably think Teen Spirit is a top 5 or so GOAT rock song. It's crazy how many times I still hear the mention it here and there. Do with that what you will

Hell, the fricking guitar riff is the into to The Breakfast Club radio show. You know, where every day they talk about the infinite ways that whitey sucks for 3hrs

The true mark of a transcendent band or artist is that their work is so profound, moving, and influential, that they become resented and people begin to question their legitimacy as an all-time great.

Nirvana falls into that category.

What I think of are moments in time when something or someone came on the scene with a sound so different that it launched an entire genre and changed our perspective of what music is.

The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show
The Beatles pioneering distortion with "Revolution"
When Jimi killed God
"Communication Breakdown" by Led Zeppelin
"Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath
Kiss reinventing the live performance game with merchandising, costumes, and an elaborate stage show.
Van Halen 1
Melt by Peter Gabriel where he and Phil Collins accidentally invented gated reverb
"Enter Sandman" by Metallica

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was likely just as disruptive, if not more so, than any of those events.

You need to add Les Paul invention of multitrack recording.

That wasn't an exclusive list, obviously. I mean, I didn't even put Elvis, Charlie Parker, Birth of the Cool, "Walk This Way", or "Break Stuff" on there.

Serious question. How old are you?

The reason I'm asking is because I personally think that having a context of popular music scene during the time when Nirvana was at their peak definitely frames one's perception of the band.

The thing about Nirvana is/was they were very young as a band when Kirk died

The reason so many people think they are the most overrated band in history is because they were.

When the masses say that a restaurant is horrible it's usually because it is. Not because they don't possess a sophisticated palate.

When the masses say a certain vehicle/engine is junk it's usually because it is. Not because the masses aren't sophisticated enough to appreciate blown engines and transmissions.

by that logic, Nevermind is an absolute all-time great album, because it's in the top 20 best selling of all time (all genres).

Guilty as charged. I went kicking and screaming from hair metal to grunge…but once it clicked for me, I couldn’t get enough of it.

Still hasn’t clicked for me. I’m still fighting the good fight.

To me, as someone from the era, they're a cultural act. Meaningful for what they represented, what they influenced. A soundtrack for an era (albeit pretty short).

I think you can easily make an objective argument that Nirvana is among the most influential, important, etc. bands of all time. Personally I think they're not terribly high on that "best of" list because I don't think they influence has aged particularly well, but nonetheless.

But I don't think you can make an objective argument that they're one of the best bands of all time, so given the attention and praise they continue to get, the overrated tag is both valid and misplaced, IMO.

They are regularly compared to the Beatles and that’s ridiculous.
