What I am certain of is the fact there was a pivotal change in musical tastes from the overproduced 1980s.

I spent the mid to late 80s discovering bands like Led Zeppelin and The Doors. Had I known about bands like the Pixies and My Bloody Valentine in the late 80s, I would have been all about them. But I must have spent my teens running with the wrong crowds.

The Seattle bands were the last of great, original music that caught on with the mainstream, imo. At the time, it was a breath of fresh air and gave hope for the future of music. Obviously, that hope didn't last very long.

Disagree. Nirvana being a mere trio had such a big sound and gave way to a completely new style of rock. Kurt Cobain's passion was contagious. Dave Grohl's songwriting is out of this world. Such a distinct sound.

Some of their big hits are super overrated but they're a really deep musical group.

You should listen to some of the isolated vocal tracks with Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl singing harmonies. They are fricking beautiful.

Nirvana was the first truly mainstream band to be a voice for the teens that really struggled to find their place in the world. No love songs. Nothing with any worldly meaning. Just songs about being a lost kid. They were pioneers both in message and in the musical style it was delivered.

Just because music is not complex and is easy to play, doesn’t make it bad.

The Who -- outside a few good songs, they're awful. They're the microbrewery who nails a few good beers and starts to think, "hmmm, what if we added strawberry jam and cricket legs to this brew?".

Journey -- garbage, garbage, garbage. Vocals suck. Songs suck. Everything about this band makes me fricking cringe. It's the embodiment of late 70's/early 80's commercialization of rock music to compete with disco. Awful.

Van Halen -- childish rock with strong guitar work. David Lee Roth has one of the most grating voices in rock history.

Fleetwood Mac (version with Stevie Nicks) -- the fact that this band went from a fantastic blues band in the late 60's, to a solid Genesis-lite in the early 70's, to the pop garbage with a bah'ing goat singing over it in the mid-late 70's is a goddamn embarrassment, especially being most people think the latter when they think of Fleetwood Mac.

You have some of the most consistently awful music opinions I have ever read on the internet. The only way I could respect your tastes less was if you were a fan of my music

I’ve mellowed a bit in my hatred of Nirvana over the years. I could not stand them when they hit the public consciousness in 1991. Today, I can appreciate the sea change they represented in rock music. However, out of the group of bands that get lumped together (Nirvana, STP, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden) they are still my least favorite by far.

Out of those, I’d rank Nirvana just ahead of STP. I went back and forth on who should have been #1. I love both of those bands so much.

4. STP
3. Nirvana
2. Soundgarden
1. Pearl Jam

I will say, I’m not the biggest AIC fan. I like them in small doses, but something about their harmonies and how slow, dark, and depressing all of their music sounds to me just gets really exhausting after more than two or three songs in a row.
