I’ve seen so many “Nirvana is overrated” takes on this board over the years. I think they might actually be underrated (at least here).

This. There’s a lot of old folks on this board who fall into two anti-Nirvana camps:
1. Hair metal fans who blame Nirvana for the death of their beloved style of guitar driven music, and see grunge as a devolution.

2. Fans of other late 80’s/90’s alternative bands that feel like Nirvana stole the spotlight from more deserving artists.

I believe that would put you in the second camp

I’m not a huge Nirvana fan, but they did make some pretty cool music here and there. Very few “mainstream” artists made music that sounded as raw as this: Aneurysm

Guilty as charged. I went kicking and screaming from hair metal to grunge…but once it clicked for me, I couldn’t get enough of it.

U2 wins that title in a landslide.

I read this thread earlier and was going to post the same thing, but resisted. Glad someone else thinks the same.

The thing about Nirvana is/was they were very young as a band when Kirk died. They had 3 studio albums, one of which (Bleach) which was very raw. They never really had anytime to mature as a band.

Additionally, you can't talk about the band without addressing the elephant in the room which was Kirk's heroine addiction. The effect it had on the band and their music is unknown. But it would have been interesting to see where they could have gone it he was clean.

If Kurt lived and got clean there’s a fairly good chance the band breaks up or at least goes on a hiatus. I could see Kurt taking a break, divorcing Courtney, and just raising Francis for a bit. Even if they got back together I can’t imagine they’d still be grunge

This. There’s a lot of old folks on this board who fall into two anti-Nirvana camps:
You two are just wrong on this one. Let's look at their career. Smells Like Teen Spirit almost had me drive off the road to listen. I'll never forget where I was. And, it has nonsensical lyrics After that, meh to the tenth power, plus a couple really popular covers. No band comes close to being as overrated as Nirvana. Not even in their tier. I see no other band was even mentioned by those who disagree. To say they are underrated is such a joke

Who overrates them? I don't know anyone that puts them in the same category as The Beatles, Zepplin and such. People respect them for their movement of a new era of music, but I don't know anyone that sells them as superior musicians and songwriters.

Nirvava was great at what they did, but there are better bands out there.

Most overrated in history? U2 has to be in the conversation. Their first few records were great, but their overall catalog is pretty much meh. Somehow they still get championed.

My vote would go to Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band. Not sure who their sounds is supposed to appeal to but it's not me.

U2 is a good call too, though.
