Meh, I'm a metal guy. Most metal-heads have little tolerance for punk. I can appreciate the role they play in music history, but it's not my thing.

I like some, but most of it isn't appealing to me.

but just as you're saying some people love to tear them down, the vast majority totally overrate their influence.

Another case of a myth being repeated enough until many people believe it.

It's almost impossible to overrate their influence. That's how hugely influential they are. Now, was it luck they were one band that broke? Yes. Would I prefer if we were having the same conversation about Mudhoney or Archers of Loaf? Yes. But they didn't break the way Nirvana did. They are the focal band which introduced most people to undergound/alternative/indie rock.

That's just the way it goes. Nirvana was the standard-bearers (though I do think they largely deserve it -- they wrote great, hooky pop songs)

Negative, if anything, as time goes by, their influence has been totally undermined and dismissed as "the right place at the right time"

I dont disagree that there is something to the latter given that popular music had fallen to the likes of bad hair metal, Paula Abdul and Vanilla Ice... making the situation ripe for a rebellion, but there is a reason it was them and not Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth or Pearl Jam... they embodied that whole movement and feeling of the time... and Smells like... was a mean motherfricker of a song!

I was coming back to mention something along these lines and big part of the influence is exposure brought to other bands because of Nirvana's popularity. Cobain talking about the influence bands like the Pixies, Sonic Youth etc had on him got those bands some exposure.

That chord structure in that song was different too.

How many bands copied the nirvana formula for songs?

Within the context of rock music the importance of certain bands is a valid topic, I don't think anyone would suggest that rock music is the most important thing in the world. Just because there are serious issues and problems in the world doesn't mean we should not find ways to entertain ourselves.

If you don't understand the question, in the context of music, then... not sure why you are on this board...

I'd agree with the first two, no doubt.

Animal Collective probably fits too because what they do is so innovative.

3 of my favorite bands.

how about the irony of someone with 28K posts on a sports themed message board claiming music is not "important"

Actually, it is the trivial things which matter most. It is the spice of life, and the things which make life worth living. Humankind has been making music maybe even longer than we can speak. It is the basis of communication, but it also a social construct that is part of what makes us human.

To deny the importnance of art, literature, music, and sports is to deny the very things which make us human and make us alive.

Oh, and take the large stick from your arse and hit yourself upside the head with it.

I always get a little irritated when someone tells me to "worry about more important things." When I'm in my death bed, I don't want to look back and realize I wasted my one and only life focusing only on what other people deem more "important."
