99% of Metallica is in standard tuning no? Seems like rock of the last 25 years is all in dropped D. Something to think about.
Yea, but a lot of it is 1/2 step drop, Eb, etc. when they play live. St. Anger was drop C IIRC

You're half right, its easy, but its not Metallica, its Nirvana.
Metallica's most important contribution was more than 25 years ago.

There is no one MOST important rock band of the last 25 years. I submit the following bands who had incredible influence on rock music for the past 25 years (in no particular order):
1. Metallica
While 25 years might leave out their first three albums it still leave And Justice for All and the Black Album. Whatever one's opinions are of these two albums (especially the black album) it's hard to deny the incredible influece they had on music for the next few years. The mere fact that people have such strong opinions about Metallica on both sides of the fence proves how much of a mark they have left on rock and metal as a whole.
2. Nirvana
Their influence inspired countless "alternative" bands of the late 90's and 2000's, put the death nail into hair metal and serve as a blue print for many indie bands to this day.
3. Radiohead
They are original, ever changing in their sound and are not afraid to take some musical risks. They are the standard for which much of the indie genre is held to.
4. U2.
I hate them, but they belong here.
5. Green Day
I hate them, but they belong here.

"I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily I should have been in that band—or at least in a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard."

Originality has little to do with the importance one plays in musical history. See Elvis and Led Zeppelin for reference.

Nice post, couldn't agree more.

I agree but The Pixies influence over Indie Rock and Nirvana themselves shouldn't be overlooked.

Nirvana is the most important band of the last 25 years IMO.

The Pixies have their place as do Jesus and the Mary Chain, Sonic Youth and the Cure. Those bands have had huge influence, but to state that they define a genre is difficult to claim. Sometimes the "most important" isn't necessarily the one who did it best or was original, but sometimes it's the one's who put it on the map.

Not sure what your point is, first of all that quote is about the song Smells Like Teen Spirit and its not like he stole their song. Everyone is influenced by someone else, that's different from "ripping off".
That however doesn't change the impact Nirvana had on music.

Nirvana effectively killed glam and hair metal and brought angst to the forefront of mainstream music.
They changed music more than any other band in the last 25 years.

Exactly my point. Elvis did all but appear in black face when performing "his" music (don't get me wrong I love me some Elvis) and it's hard to deny his influence on rock. Just because you were highly influenced or stole a formula doesn't automatically deny you from having a huge impact on music.

Great piont and I can agree with your list even in that order, though instead of Green Day (who i really like) maybe someone like Korn or Linkin Park should get some mention as being fore runners of Nu Metal, incorporating Hip Hop and Metal.

While I agree with you that their impact on music was huge; I don't agree with the totalitarity of your statement. Perhaps I am bias, but the top 5 list I created above covers most sub-genres of rock music for the past 25 years.

I thought about Korn or Linkin Park, but "nu-metal" and "rap metal" is all but dead since about 2004. They were really a short lived phase and I don't see much of their influence showing up in rock or heavy metal today. If we wanted to include rap-metal or nu-metal I would name Faith No More as more important to the genre than LP or Korn.

That's fair, but I think Green Day is covering similar ground to Nirvana. We should also mention Pearl Jam, if nothing else, Vedder's singing style has influenced several others

I am open to arguments of replacing Green Day with Pearl Jam.

I think it's between Metallica & Nirvana.
