Do you know any one who has ever had a job in the music industry? They most certainly do decide what to push and push it with all of their might. The internet is changing it some, but it is still a major force. Hell, even Kurt Cobain himself, was fully aware of it and it led to a lot of his self-loathing.

No, I like being called a moron by some jackhole making a strawman argument.

I think Nirvana is the most overrated band of the last 25 years.

Completely irrelevant to the discussion.

actually you do, you just take the contrary point of view for its own sake. Disliking something because its popular is no different than liking something because its popular.

Nirvana wasn't/isn't influential?

News to me and everyone else in the world

Musically, they were not. Please tell me one sound they created. Tell me one technique that they made popular. Tell me one unique guitar chord that they introduced.

5.5 pages and no mention of RHCP? Wow.

Much more legitimate argument than Nirvana, in my opinion. Flea, along with Les Claypool, influenced an entire generation of bass players. They are also known as originators of a sound (along with Mr. Bungle).

No it isn't. It's totally relevant. If you can't see that, you're without hope.

I honestly cant believe this thread went over 5 pages without mentioning them. They are the most important band of the last 25 years. Most influential? I suppose thats a different argument.

anthony kiedis - is one of the best frontmen/ lyricists in the last 25 years without a doubt.

Flea - self explanatory, one of the best bassist ever much less the last 25 years

Frusciante, Navarro - Amazing

I think Josh will prove to be amazing as well.

Chad Smith- Chad Smith

yes

Yes, after they see whats popular, they push it. They do not sit around and say, lets see after hair metal, what we need is....

The smarter ones can see when something is played out or will be playing out and go look for something different and then push that, but the first bands like that they sign, they sign because they are different, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AIC all got signed around the same time because the labels were looking for something new and found it, but the bands were authentic. AIC came out before Nirvana, but didn't break thru. Nirvana turned the world upside down, that's why they are more important than other bands that influenced them and may have been better.

not its not, the discussion is who where the most important bands, whether someone was over rated or not is some one's opinion. Back on page one M lists his top 5, which includes 2 bands he says hates.

Some people think they are elite because they like obscure stuff, and eschew anything popular. If you like it, you like it and I don't give a shite whether it was popular or not.

What you think is "important" will definitely come down to your taste but you can bet your arse it will be a "popular" band. Commercial doesn't always mean shite. Sometimes a band is popular simply because many people think their music is good, and some bands remain obscure, because they appeal to very few.

This is the only part I disagree with. He's basically the part that keeps me from enjoying most of their stuff. Also, his attitude doesn't help. As big of an arse as Mike Patton is, I'm totally in his camp in the Mr. Bungle v. RHCP debate. That whole festival thing ensured I would never pay for any RHCP material.

I don't dislike Nirvana. I think they are overrated, which is a direct response to the belief that they "changed music."

Didnt Metallica pretty much pioneer thrash metal which has since split into the myriad styles of metal we have today? If they arent the most important, they are certainly up there.
