Pedro the Lion - June 18, 1976
You were born in KC, Missouri
To a girl who wasn't married
After your birth she brought you to the nursery
Kissed your head and told you not to worry
And the quietly she turned and slipped away
In the elevator her heart began to pound
To the rooftop, in her slippers, and her gown
On the edge, she took one last look around
Then closed her eyes and pushed away
Speeding toward the ground
Through the air without a sound
So gracefully
Twelve flights down, nearly naked on the ground
Skin and tragedy always attract a crowd
So it was when the policeman came around
He took more than fifty eyewitness accounts
Each one in awe, for they'd never seen a girl so sad and beautiful
Speeding toward the ground
Through the air without a sound
Speeding toward the ground
Through the air without a sound
So gracefully

When the realization hits that the person that you’ve spent half of your life with, well…
Matthew Sweet - You Don’t Love Me
Matthew Sweet - You Don’t Love Me
quote:
What a beautiful moment The truth comes out at last Once your heart would own me forever Then this passed And what a beautiful moment As my heard comes apart Drunk and in a manner of saying, wasted
'Cause you don't love me You don't love me You can't see how I matter in this world Even though I loved you You can't believe that If you find something You think might make you happy Then I guess it's okay, I think it's okay If you go away
Blown right out of my senses I did not know what to do Lost and badly wanting someone To see me through That's why I needed you But you don't love me, you don't love me You can't see how I matter in this world Even though I loved you You can't believe that You think that leaving Is what will make you happy Then I guess it's okay, I think it's okay If you go away
'Cause you don't love me You don't love me You can't see how I matter in this world Even though I loved you You can't believe that You think that leaving Is what will make you happy Then I guess it's okay, I think it's okay If you go away
'Cause you don't love me You don't love me...

In all seriousness to my Billy Ocean song, I'm surprised The Cure hasn't been mentioned.
*Looks at STigers*
The entire Pornography, Disintegration albums might qualify.

Pictures Of You
I've been looking so long at these pictures of you
That I almost believe that they're real
I've been living so long with my pictures of you
That I almost believe that the pictures are all I can feel
Remembering you standing quiet in the rain
As I ran to your heart to be near
And we kissed as the sky fell in, holding you close
How I always held close in your fear
Remembering you running soft through the night
You were bigger and brighter and wider than snow
You screamed at the make-believe, screamed at the sky
And you finally found all your courage to let it all go
Remembering you, fallen into my arms
Crying for the death of your heart
You were stone white, so delicate
Lost in the cold
You were always so lost in the dark
Remembering you how you used to be
Slow drowned, you were angels
So much more than everything
Hold for the last time then slip away quietly
Open my eyes, but I never see anything
If only I'd thought of the right words
I could have held on to your heart
If only I'd thought of the right words
I wouldn't be breaking apart all my pictures of you
Looking so long at these pictures of you
But I never hold on to your heart
Looking so long for the words to be true
But always just breaking apart
My pictures of you
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to feel you deep in my heart
There was nothing in the world that I ever wanted more
Than to never feel the breaking apart
My pictures of you
A Letter To Elise
Oh Elise it doesn't matter what you say
I just can't stay here every yesterday
Like keep on acting out the same the way we act out
Every way to smile forget and make-believe
We never needed any more than this
Any more than this
Oh Elise it doesn't matter what you do
I know I'll never really get inside of you
To make your eyes catch fire the way they should
The way the blue could pull me in
If they only would
If they only would
At least I'd lose this sense of sensing
Something else that hides away
From me and you there're worlds to part
With aching looks and breaking hearts
And all the prayers your hands can make
Oh I just take as much as you can throw
And then throw it all away
Oh I throw it all away
Like throwing faces at the sky
Like throwing arms round
Yesterday, I stood and stared wide-eyed in front of you
And the face I saw looked back the way I wanted to
But I just can't hold my tears away the way you do
Elise believe I never wanted this
Thought this time I'd keep all of my promises
Thought you were the girl I always dreamed about
But I let the dream go
And the promises broke
And the make-believe ran out
So Elise it doesn't matter what you say
I just can't stay here every yesterday
Like keep on acting out the same the way we act out
Every way to smile forget and make-believe
We never needed any more than this
Any more than this
And every time I try to pick it up like falling sand
As fast as I pick it up
It runs away through my clutching hands
But there's nothing else I can really do
There's nothing else I can really do
There's nothing else I can really do at all

“Laura” was the roommate of Christopher Cross’s girlfriend at college in Ohio. She was killed by a stray bullet from a gang shootout while riding in the back of a car.
“Think of Laura”
Every once in a while
I'd see her smile
And she'd turn my day around
A girl with those eyes could stare through the lies
And see what your heart was saying
Think of Laura
But laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
When you think of Laura
Laugh don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
A friend of a friend
A friend 'til the end
That's the kind of girl she was
Taken away so young
Taken away without a warning
I know you and you're here
In every day we live
I know her and well, she's here
I can feel her when I sing
Hey Laura, where are you now?
Are you far away from here?
I don't think so
I think you're here taking our tears away

Just pick any song from the Eels' "Beautiful Freak" or "Electro Shock Blues". No fun to hear but fricking perfect.

Bruce Springsteen's "Downbound Train". Simply about a working class man struggling with employment and a woman.
I had a job, I had a girl
I had something going, mister, in this world
I got laid off down at the lumberyard
Our love went bad, times got hard
Now I work down at the car wash
Where all it ever does is rain
Don't you feel like you're a rider
On a downbound train?
She just said "Joe, I gotta go
We had it once, we ain't got it anymore"
She packed her bags, left me behind
She bought a ticket on the Central Line
Nights as I sleep, I hear that whistle whining
I feel her kiss in the misty rain
And I feel like I'm a rider
On a downbound train
Last night, I heard your voice
You were crying, crying, you were so alone
You said your love had never died
You were waiting for me at home
Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods
I ran till I thought my chest would explode
There in a clearing beyond the highway
In the moonlight, our wedding house shone
I rushed through the yard, I burst through the front door
My head pounding hard, up the stairs I climbed
The room was dark, our bed was empty
Then I heard that long whistle whine
And I dropped to my knees, hung my head, and cried
Now I swing a sledgehammer on a railroad gang
Knocking down them cross ties, working in the rain
Now don't it feel like you're a rider
On a downbound train?
I had a job, I had a girl
I had something going, mister, in this world
I got laid off down at the lumberyard
Our love went bad, times got hard
Now I work down at the car wash

Did you call for the night porter?
You smell the blood running warm
I stay close to this frozen border, so close I can hit it with a stone
Now something crawls right up my spine
That I always got to follow
Turn out the lights
Don't see me drawn and hollow
Just blood running warm
No one needs to tell you that
There's no use for ya here anymore
And where are your friends?
They've gone away
It's a different world, they left you to this
To janitor
The emptiness
So let's get it on
When the sun is finally going down, and you're overdue to follow
But you're still above the ground
What ya got comin' is hard to swallow
Like blood running warm
Did they call for the night porter
And smell the blood, blood running warm
Well I've been waitin at this frozen border, so close you could hit it with a stone
When your number isn’t up

Christmas at Denny’s by Randy Stonehill
YouTube link
They got Christmas Muzak
Piped in through the ceiling
And the refills of coffee
Are always for free
And the waitress on graveyard
And the surly night manager
Are wishing that all of us losers would leave
There's a star on the sign
At the Texaco Station
Like the star long ago
On that midnight clear
As I look all around
At these cold, empty faces
I doubt that you'd find many wise men here
And I'm dreaming about
A silent night
Holy night
When things were alright
And I'm dreaming about
How my life could have been
If only, if only, if only
But somewhere down the road
I gave up that fight
Merry Christmas
It's Christmas at Denny's tonight
Once I had a home
And a wife and a daughter
Had a company job
Earning middle-class pay
Then Lisa got killed
By a car near the schoolyard
And my wife started drinking
Just to get through each day
I will never forget that little red wagon
Turning to rust all alone in the rain
One morning I flagged down
A truck on the highway
I just couldn't bear to go back there again
And I'm dreaming about
A silent night
Holy night
When things were alright
And I'm dreaming about
How my life could have been
If only, if only, if only
Well, it's not just the blind man
Who loses his sight
Merry Christmas
It's Christmas at Denny's tonight
They say
Life's made of cruel circumstance
Fate plays the tune and we dance
Dance til we drop
In the dust and we're gone
And the world just goes on
The cop at the counter
He's the guardian angel
He watches these orphans
Through dark mirrored shades
And the register rings
Like a bell sadly tolling
For the fools we've become
And the price that we paid
Oh when I was a boy
I believed in Christmas
Miracle season to make a new start
I don't need no miracle, sweet baby Jesus
Just help me find
Some kind of hope in my heart
And I'm dreaming about
A silent night
Holy night
When things were alright
And I'm dreaming about
How my life could have been
If only, if only, if only
But I'll still be here
At the morning's first light
Merry Christmas
It's Christmas at Denny's tonight

Johnny Cash's version of Hurt might be the most powerful but depressing song/video. I also think Flaming Lips "Do you realize" is one of those beautiful but depressing songs
Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize
We're floating in space?
Do you realize
That happiness makes you cry?
Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Do you realize?
Do you realize
That you have the most beautiful face?
Do you realize
We're floating in space?
Do you realize
That happiness makes you cry?
Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Do you realize?

And it's a battered old suitcase
In a hotel someplace
And a wound that would never heal
No prima donnas
the perfume is on an
old shirt that is stained with blood and whiskey
And goodnight to the street-sweepers,
The night watchmen flame-keepers
And goodnight Matilda too
Goodnight Matilda too.

When I'm blue and want to wallow in it for just a minute (not sure if I'm the only one who wants to do that sometimes) I always put on Everybody Hurts by REM. It lets me wallow in it then get back up.
When your day is long
And the night, the night is yours alone
When you're sure you've had enough
Of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go
'Cause everybody cries
Everybody hurts sometimes
Sometimes everything is wrong
Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go (hold on)
If you think you've had too much
Of this life, well hang on
'Cause everybody hurts
Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts
Don't throw your hand, oh no
Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone
No, no, no, you are not alone
If you're on your own in this life
The days and nights are long
When you think you've had too much
Of this life to hang on
Well, everybody hurts sometimes
Everybody cries
Everybody hurts, sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes
So hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts
A song I see roundly lambasted but that I heard as a young boy for the first time is "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jack. That one always gets me in the feels and I like it despite the fact that it is apparently a terrible song
