For me it was the Alarm opening for the Pretenders at the Saenger. I had heard the song the Stand but wasn't a big Alarm fan. They played most of their new album, Declaration, and the crowd was on their feet the entire set. I went out the next day and

I am going to see the Alarm toward the end of the summer, playing with Gene Loves Jezebel and Modern English

Not a true opener in the real sense of the word, but Avatar played a little bit after noon, on a side stage, at a metal festival I was at a few years ago. I had never heard of them, but there stage set up and music had everyone's attention.

I have seen them twice since then. They aren't my favorite band by any means, but they are a fun show live.

Didn't know Circa Survive until I saw them open for Coheed and Cambria. Saw a band called Protein open for King's X.

Incubus was the opening act for 311 at the Centroplex in 1997. Sugar Ray was the middle act!

I saw Mastodon open for Clutch in 2003.

I saw Corrosion of Conformity open for Metallica in the late 90's. I remember walking by as they were playing "Broken Man," and I was like, "Jesus Christ, who are these guys?"

so many...

pavement, guided by voices, grifters, archers of loaf, versus... the list is endless during the 90s indie rock heyday

Went to Lollapalooza in 1993 and the first band out that day was Tool. Never heard of them and Sober had not hit yet. Remember being very impressed with their stuff.

melissa etheridge (yes, really) at the eagles show at the dome many years ago. she was incredible and put the eagles and their rote "play the hits for money" scheme straight into the dirt, at least that night

Accept on the Powerslave tour, they were great

Ghost in 2017, very tight band live

Both bands I had heard of but never really listened to either much if at all, fans of both since.

The band they really stuck with me was Jane's Addiction opened for Love & Rockets at Tipitina's in '87. I guess I was expecting a mellowed out alternative band from England but instead got some smacked out gutter punk freaks from LA. I went and bought the Triple X album at Tower ASAP. Stephen Perkins was the man.

Pa-pa-pa-pa-pa-pig oh yeah, got damn pigs.

I saw Manchester Orchestra open for Brand New years ago. I had heard of MO before then but listened to them. They were awesome. Also, Kevin Divine was there.

Damn I believe that was shortly after Opiate was released. That must've been awesome

It was great. And Rage came on right after them and they were also still pretty new. They killed it.

Blue Oyster Cult opened for Rush in Charlotte, NC in the mid-80s. I was unfamiliar with BOC at the time.
