melissa etheridge (yes, really) at the eagles show at the dome many years ago.
I remember that show. She did put on a great show.
Years before that, though, I saw the Who open for Herman's Hermits. That had to be my all-time favorite.
Also, Sammy Hagar totally stole the show when he opened for Boston.

The Mars Volta opening for A Perfect Circle In 2004. APC was one of my favorite bands then. TMV became a bigger favorite after I saw their gig. They stole the show. I’d never seen so much raw energy in a show before or after.

I’ve seen some incredible bands as openers who I already knew a little bit about or knew a couple songs and knew they were supposed to be fantastic. One in particular though that was brand new to me was Rage Against The Machine opening for House Of Pain in March 1993. I literally heard either that day or the day before that they were supposed to be pretty damn good. And if I recall correctly they weren’t even selling their debut in the stores. They were doing it strictly DIY and it was available at their shows. They were fricking incredible as you can imagine, and I bought the CD that night at the show. Of course Zach did preach a good bit from the stage between songs. I don’t even remember exactly what he was prattling on about but I do remember him urging everyone to write letters to the White House. I wasn’t even a fan of Bill Clinton but I was thinking come on man just shut up and play.
They blew up pretty soon afterward because a few months later they were on the main stage at Lollapalooza.
Another one that blew me away was when I saw Corrosion Of Conformity and Crowbar out at Jax Beach in 2005. Well the opener was Alabama Thunderpussy. Had never heard them, and they blistered the place. Phenomenal. I wish they were still at it. Never quite got their due in that “dirty grungy southern metal” sound, IMO.
Rage would have to be tops on my list though, at least to the best of my memory at this moment.

Scorpions opening up for Nugent.
First time I ever heard the Zoo and the bass line was like getting a tooth drilled- awesome.

INXS opened for The Go-Go's at the amphitheater during the 1984 Worlds Fair. First time I had ever heard of INXS and they were excellent live.
