What opening band have you never heard of, but walked away impressed and bought (these days downloaded) the album?
Both of my picks opened for Robert Earl Keen, but 10-15 years apart from each other. Kasey Chambers and The White Buffalo.

I saw the band Clarke and the Himselfs (really just one guy playing a bunch instruments) open for Built to Spill twice. Came away impressed both times and bought his album. It was good.

Dillon Fence, they opened for the Cure in New Orleans.
Had barely heard of the Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam, they both opened for the RHCP at Municipal Auditorium

Maiden....yeah seriously
Back in the early '80s I went to a .38 Special concert in Memphis....the middle band was Point Blank.....the opener was Maiden touring Number of the Beast. Yeah I had heard of them but never heard them.....been a fan ever since.

I was at that RHCP show. What an awesome lineup.
For me it was the Alarm opening for the Pretenders at the Saenger. I had heard the song the Stand but wasn't a big Alarm fan. They played most of their new album, Declaration, and the crowd was on their feet the entire set. I went out the next day and picked up Declaration. Great show. Also, Chrissie Hynde threatened to stop the show if security guards didnt stop screwing with fans who wanted to stand in front of the stage. Everyone went to the front after that. Both bands killed it.

Highly Suspect a few years ago. They absolutely killed it live.

Hall and Oates in earlier 70s. They were a back up to the back up band.
We had front row seats. I remember saying "these guys are really good and could go somewhere."
FYI- Brownsville Station was backup band
Dr. John was headliner and had just dropped his Right Place Wrong Place album.

Radiohead
They opened for REM in 95 or 96. Creep had just been released but wasn't very popular yet. Bought Pablo Honey the next day.
Several others, but that's the biggest name. More recently, saw Phoebe Bridgers open for someone 3 or so years ago and she blew me away.

saw them open for someone (maybe zoso? Not sure) in Athens circa 2004 and was very impressed. Don't remember a single song or anythign at all about them other than their name and that I was impressed ha.
I saw Van Halen in atlanta and the opening song from the opener was Send my Baby Home by Laidlaw: LINK
I was blown away especially by that intro. Went home and instantly downloaded it from some sharing site, still on teh ipod today.

Saw Meshuggah open for Slayer in New Orleans in 1998. Had never heard of them and now they're one of my favorite bands.

Also saw Sturgill Simpson open for Jason Isbell a few years ago. Sturgill was starting to get a little buzz, but I had never listened to him.
