re: Remembering Eddy Shaver...

Posted by Geaux Frogs on 12/27/22 at 3:45 pm to
My father in law used to have Billy Joe and Eddy play at his company picnics at his ranch before they had any sort of fame.

I wasn’t around yet for any of those, but he did play out there several times after I was in the picture, and we went to see him anytime he was playing close.

Always a good time.

Check out Mike Judge’s Tales from the Tour Bud episode on Billy Joe Shaver for some more interesting stuff on Eddy and Billy Joe.

Whiskey Myers is one of my favorites…I have seen them several times in lots of different sized venues.

We saw them at Red Rocks in June (subtle brag), and it was my least favorite of any time I have seen them.

I am glad that they are seeing the success they deserve, but I loved seeing them in a venue that hold 1200 people. I guess those days are over! Hahaha

Is it enough to shop around? Find a small jeweler who will buy it. If it is a nice piece, they will resell it, and pay you for the piece. If it isn’t a piece that they think could be resold, there is value in the gold/silver/titanium/stones.

My wife works for a jeweler doing exactly this…she can’t help you, we are in TX…but I guarantee that you can find someone to sell it to in a private sale if you don’t want to keep it in a drawer somewhere.

Gold is high right now, little pieces can add up. You aren’t going to get full spot price, they have to be able to make money on it, but all of them will give you a different percentage. Shop around and find the best deal for yourself.

re: Can you bench your weight?

This seems like it calls for a PROOF thread.

Drag a scale near the bench, weigh, show the bar loaded up equal to weight, one rep. Should all fit in a GIF.

BTW…I am 43, in the gym 5 days a week, and seriously don’t know what my bench max is. I haven’t done a one rep max since high school.
I carry a VP9. It is perfect for me. I have tried to replace it several times, and I just can’t seem to shoot better with anything else.

All I own is striker fired pistols.

The DA Wolfman is legit. I love it for my PCCs.

But, it’s diameter is a bit too big for a pistol. I have a FN509 Tactical that has suppressor height sights, and they are covered up with the Wolfman attached.
We have a Samsung in our “formal” livingroom. We love it. A handful of free art to choose from, but you can also load custom pics of your own. Otherwise you can buy different art, or subscribe to their monthly access. Ours has been mostly custom pics.

We have had it about 3 months, and it has only been in TV mode for roughly 2/3 hours. We wanted a TV in the room, but wanted it to look like art most of the time, so this works for us.
I went to a show in Dallas a few weeks ago that required a negative test/vaccine card AND a mask to get in. They didn’t publicize needing a mask, but had them for sale for $1 at the door.

There were literally what looked like 1500 brand new masks on the ground just inside the door, and hardly a mask in the performance area.
There are options. But most people price shop for flights, and as mentioned, shy away from paying three times the amount for a flight than they can find elsewhere.

JSX airlines flies to several destinations out of Dallas. Destin/Vegas/LA.

Smaller plane, just one first class style seat on each side of the aisle. Board from the airport FBO, so no security and 1.5 hour lead time.

Prices aren’t completely unreasonable.

You just aren’t going to find that option on Expedia.
Wife and I stayed at a 1 bedroom cabin called Meadowlark in Hochatown. Great cabin. Hochatown has a ton of great new cabins. Broken Bow seems like the older part of town.

We rented a side by side from Captains Hideaway and rode around the state park. Note…you pick up the trailer and haul it to the park, you need a truck.

Grab supplies/food/snacks before you get to Hochatown, there is literally no where to buy groceries Once you get out of Broken Bow.

Other than that…not much to do other than enjoy each other’s company. Handful of restaurants around, nothing fancy.
I watched the entire set because I had never seen them, and they were the last band before the headliner. I was just keeping my spot! Haha

re: Help Me Understand Deftones

Posted by Geaux Frogs on 12/30/21 at 9:49 am to
Saw them at a festival a few years ago. The entire crowd didn’t get Deftones.

Possibly one of the deadest crowds I’ve ever seen. Chino was doing everything he could to get a reaction, climbing amps, knocking amps and mic stands over…no reaction, nothing. As they walked off stage, he swept his arm across an amp in disgust that had about 7/8 water bottles on it back stage. Stage hands we’re freaking out trying to clean up.

Possibly a top 10 worst performance I have ever seen. If I see them on a show I purposefully don’t buy tickets.

The articles posted by NoleMan explain everything. Read them so you are not surprised by the 11:45pm last call at the bars and restaurants.

We were there 2 weeks ago, and it was a shock (because we weren't prepared) that everything closed at 11pm. No big deal after the first night...you adjust and have a great time!
Wife and I were there in March 2020...right before all of the shutdowns began.

We stayed a few nights at Youngberg Hill outside of McMinnville. The rooms were great, grounds were beautiful, people were very friendly, and breakfast was good.

We kept our wine tasting to several wineries pretty close to the Inn, there were plenty. The wineries and experiences are more Sonoma than Napa...and that could be a good thing depending on what you are looking for. There are several big grand estates that have been built, but most are smaller intimate places. Honestly, thinking back, I can't remember names, because nothing stood out as amazing. We went into McMinnville for dinner at a few casual places in the evening; Golden Valley Brewery was a decent atmosphere.

We also spent a few days on the coast at the Stephanie Inn. The Inn was amazing, and there are several restaurants within a few blocks along Cannon Beach.

COVID fears were ramping up, and that time of year is their offseason, so it was dead at both the wineries and the Cannon Beach area. The weather was cold and misty, but that didn't bother us too much. It was a fun trip with some great scenery.

Old Navy Active Tall. Not super form fitting, and not too boxy.

Best part is...I find them for around $10 on the sale rack everytime I go in.
Me and some buddies did a trip a few years ago to WV and stayed/rafted/climbed with Adventures on the Gorge.

We stayed in a cabin on the property, rafted the Gauley River, and did a guided rock climbing day. It was a great time, but we went before school was out for the year...I could see where that was a super family friendly place, and probably has lots of kids running around in the Summer. We are all in fairly decent shape, and the rafting was fun/challenging, and the rock climbing was a serious challenge.

Fayetteville, WV was a small town a few miles away with a few breweries and restaurants.

We have done Napa/Sonoma 5 or 6 times, and we were in McMinnville when all of the stay at home orders came down in March.

Oregon was good, however, we prefer Napa/Sonoma. It simply boils down to the availability of nice restaurants in the immediate area in the wine region that makes it a more enjoyable destination for us. The area just feels like more of a "destination" than Williamette did for us. However, some people are looking for that too.

We are headed to Napa the 2nd weekend of Dec. It will always be a great getaway for us.

re: Sellier &Bellott ammo

Posted by Geaux Frogs on 10/27/20 at 4:54 pm to
This is about the only thing I shoot at the range any more. Seriously, never had a FTF or FTE with the 115 or 124 gr 9mm. Priced right, and I second that it seems to be a bit cleaner than other similarly priced target ammo.

re: Grass over old tree stumps

Posted by Geaux Frogs on 7/30/20 at 4:38 pm to
I removed a tree, and left the stump dust in the space. It took about 4 years for the ground stump "dust" to decompose enough to allow sod to grow over the spot. The sod just kept dying.

As I understand it, the decomposition process releases gas/heat, and it is not a good environment to allow the grass to grow.

So, to reinforce the suggestions here...remove quite a bit of the ground stump, and make sure there is a substantial layer of good dirt under your sod/seed.
The portable AC units are perfect for this. They are not terribly expensive, you can roll it out into a closet and get it out of the way if needed, and most importantly, take about 5 minutes to get going. There is no need to crawl and work in the attic.

We have used a unit to cool garage spaces, and even semi enclosed tailgates...they work.

It is a $120/150 unit that if it breaks down, you buy another one. No need to alter you $6K home AC.
