SRV continues effortlessly when he breaks a string during Look at Little Sister.

Prince

While My Guitar Gently Weeps from the tribute to George Harrison in 2004

Why do people keep saying this? Prince was a good guitarist and a great musician, no doubt. And that solo was OK, I guess.

But by no means is Prince in the top 100 guitarists or does that solo make the top 500. I actually find it kind of overdone and cringeworthy.

Is this a millennial thing since there are now very few truly great guitarists out there getting any mass media exposure? I just don’t get it.

I'm with you. He was an exceptional all around musician, but I remember when he died, many people on this board were saying he was considered a guitar God. With all due respect, I just don't see it.

Name me 99 better guitarist keeping in mind the fact that Prince could not only play straight ahead rock, but could also play R&B. I honestly believe they guy was technically a lot better than most people know or ever heard. The problem with Prince was simply the music he wrote and produced didn't give him the chance to "range" from a solo standpoint.

I saw him live 3 times and each time I came away thinking the same thing I came away with after seeing Neil Schon. This guy is criminally underrated.

If you took a poll of your top 100 guitarist, I'd almost be willing to bet they would put Prince in their top 100.

My main point was him being referenced as a guitar God. I consider him an exceptional musician as I stated above. I guess I didn't make myself clear. Would you consider him a guitar God?

My opinion of who the Guitar Gods are is probably worth about a dime.

I do not consider him a Guitar God, although I would have him in my top 100, keeping in mind there are at least 100 guys no one has ever heard of that are better.

For me it's not just about the playing but the style that those guys develop. Jon Harrington is an incredible guitarist, but he gets paid to play what others recorded years before. I'm always impressed with guys who are talented enough to come up with the licks that people try and copy and learn for years into the future.

Prime example, the guy who played on Main Street. Nothing technically flashy at all, just a simple line that has become known world wide.

Highly doubtful. Prince was a great musician, but not in the top 100 guitar players and his solo on My Guitar Gently Weeps was not great at all. The guy said himself he had never even heard the song before being asked to play for that special.

Agreed. It's a run of the mill solo and isn't even some of his best musicianship

If you ever get the chance to meet Eric Clapton (not that I have), ask him how great of a guitar player Prince was. Just don't expect a short and sweet answer from him.

I’ve read the anecdote that has been falsely attributed to him. Clapton actually made a Facebook post when Prince passed in which he praised him but didn’t say anything about his ability with a guitar-which was the perfect and appropriate opportunity for Clapton to do so.

When Jimi Hendrix died, Clapton started playing a Stratocaster as a way to honor him. I don’t see Clapton picking up a purple Prince custom guitar these days.

I kinda figure Joe Bonamassa deserves a kudo or two, the lead guitarist from Jethro Tull and perhaps Blackmore and the cat from Mahogany Rush. Lots and lots of virtuoso guitarists.

The thing with prince is that there is just not a lot of stuff out there with him playing stuff on the guitar (that I have found). I went to YouTube before expecting to find a lot of cool video of him on guitar and there just isn't many.
so its hard to judge just how skilled a player he was

I remember watching a special on mtv 20-25 yrs ago, top 100 musicians of all time (prince was 6th) and robert plant and clapton
both said he was the best guitarist alive at the time.

This is all opinion and personal taste, but prince has a few things working against him as far as his legacy goes, and some are self inflicted. 1) he was black, and if your last name ain't hendrix that is 2 strikes out of the chute. 2) he was an absolute control freak about his videos and live performances being kept offline. 3) his flamboyant personality and "weirdness" worked against him with the general public. He's the only straight male who could pull off the clothes/hairstyles he had, and still look cool. You never heard about prince in jeans and a t shirt. Everyone that knew him said he was 24/7 prince. That negatively effects public perception. It's almost like he was trying to sabatoge his own success. 4) he gets lumped together with michael jackson because of their same age and domination of the 80's, but mike wasn't a pimple on prince's arse musically, and they both knew it.

The special I referenced above was based on a poll of musicians that mtv took at the time, and they voted prince 6th. The beatles were one, and I don't remember much else. That alone is high praise from his peers though.

That's certainly true but what impresses me about Harrington is that when doing a solo for Steely Dan, it begins along the same lines as the original solo but then it starts to deviate and puts his own spin on it. And he did learn that solo in Reeling In the Years that nobody else seemed to be able to figure out.

I do think he's a pretty good guitarist in his own right but I agree that he's not Guitar God material. Maybe some day.
