this is from Steven Hyden a music writer I agree with almost 90% of the time. He’s also an adult unlike for example the chodes on that NYT panel

His list, reverse order

Rancid, … And Out Come The Wolves (1995)
I wanted to ride for at least one punk album that (1) came out when I was in high school that was also (2) a remnant of that nineties skate punk sound. I actually saw Rancid on this tour and it was a pivotal “rock show” experience of my teens. A sentimental choice, sure, but this album is fantastic and holds up!

Jay Reatard, Blood Visions (2006)
I also wanted to include one album from this century that was worthy. A true “punk as a sound” record that can stand with the classics. I almost thought it was impossible and then I remembered the late, great Jay Reatard. Blood Visions did not make the Rolling Stone list! It is better than all the “modern” “punk” records that did!

The Replacements, Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash (1981)
I like it less than Let It Be, Tim, and Pleased To Meet Me, but this one is their greatest “punk” record. (Stink is possibly more “punk” but it’s less “great.”)

The Sex Pistols, Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols (1977)
Boring choice, I know, but choosing to be boring in 2026 is the real punk move, maaaaan.

The Clash, The Clash (1977)
To be clear, I refer to the American version with “Clash City Rockers,” “Complete Control,” “(White Man) In Hammersmith Palais,” “I Fought The Law,” and “Jail Guitar Doors.” Supposedly “watered down” from the original U.K. version, all those songs are way better than the ones they replaced, and they make the bastardized redux one of the greatest rock 'n’ roll albums (and the greatest punk record) of all time.

certainly agree with the top 2 but they are considered two of the greatest records of any genre all time.

I get their place in history, but there isn't a more boring "punk" than John Lydon.

Some will classify this as proto-punk, but it 100% deserves to be in the conversation:

Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power

Not sure where it fits in the rankings, but this one needs to be on there.

Black Flag - Damaged

Maybe it's because I've never really listened to anything other than their radio hits, which I pretty well universally hate (with "Train in Vain" being the only exception as I consider it a middling song), but for anyone to consider the Clash a punk band - much less the greatest punk band of all time - just mystifies the frick out of me. They sound nothing like punk rock. Again, maybe their back catalog is filled with punk gold, but I'd never know it because all their hits are straight up new wave, and not very good new wave at that.

4. X Los Angeles
5. Minutemen Double Nickels on the Dime

Honorable mention: Sex Pistols Never Mind the Bullocks, Husker Du Zen Arcade, Wire Pink Flag, New York Dolls.

listen to that album…white riot and white man in hammersmith palais are punk classics. The whole album is quite different from what’s played on the radio

Their debut album sounded everything like punk rock. Give Em Enough Rope did too to a lesser extent. After that they evolved to make masterpieces like London Calling which still held punkish sensibilities. You should listen to more than 3-4 songs. London calling is a top 20 album of all time.

I like his last album the best.

This one deserves a mention:

I should have used the Clash as my nominee in the "popular bands that you just do not get" thread. Their inclusion on any kind of "best of" list is incomprehensible to me.

Most music genre labels have more to do with "aesthetics" and self-categorization, than they do the actual music.

You can make a straight-up rap song, but wear a cowboy hat and you are country.

You can make a rock or metal song, but wear flannel and jeans and you are grunge.

It is a problem with the genre, for sure. The Clash were actually way too talented to be a "punk" band. Just mindless distortion and anger, without much in the way of musical facility sort of defines bands like The Sex Pistols (for that matter, most bands that the purists consider "punk"). I included their "opus" on my list just for completeness. The attitude and impact of the Pistols is undeniable, although I have their album clearly 5 out of my Top 5.

But, as talented as The Clash were, they wanted to be punks so they were the best g-ddamned punks you ever saw. THE best.

"The only band that matters."

Black Flag - Damaged
Husker Du - Zen Arcade
The Damned - Music for Pleasure
Germs - GI
Misfits - '86 Collection

(^^ this one)

Confining this to a list of 5 is impossible, but The Clash is woefully overrated.

Clash, Pistols, and Ramones are non-negotiable.

The other two could live in so many places. Iggy, X, Bad Religion, etc. and Out Comes the Wolves is a no skip album for sure.

So I will throw out two no one has mentioned.

Social Distortion- Social Distortion
The Cramps - Flamejob
