Carlin - He had so much extremely good material and his delivery was one which no one else could really do and still do the material justice.

Eddie Murphy - He was even better in his standups than he was on SNL (and he was damned good on SNL).

Richard Pryor - Like Carlin, his stuff was hard for others to imitate and he doubled down on presenting his humor with numerous movies (writing and performing).

Robin Williams - Insanely high energy (even after he stopped doing coke) and his material was unique. His ability to hilariously adlib is still pretty much unparalleled.

If we have to pick only dead comedians, I would swap out Sam Kinison or Rodney Dangerfield for Eddie Murphy.

Kinison was a fricking monster of comedy. He was off-putting to many because of his yelling, but if you could get past that you would encounter some of the most creatively hilarious bits on things like marriage, drugs, foreigners, cunnlingus, etc. you've ever heard.

Honorable Mentions:

-Andrew "Dice" Clay - His early stuff was unbelievably funny, he sold out MSG back when the only two other comedians to do that were George Carlin and Eddie Murphy. He waned once he cried on Arsenio and got his own sitcom. He hasn't been able to recapture that prior level of fame.

Dave Chappelle - His standups pre and post Chappelle Show have been stellar and Chappelle Show became part of the cultural zeitgeist even years after it was off the air. His more recent standups have been good, but he seems to be getting angrier in his standups as he ages and that anger seems to be replacing the good-natured fun of earlier bits.

Chris Rock - Another SNL alum who was already known when on SNL but then skyrocketed once he left the show and did some movies and recorded standups. If he had done more standups (especially if they were on the level of Bigger & Blacker), he might be a contender for one of the main spots.

I agree with most of these lists, but Redd Foxx needs to be on all of them.

Man I thought I’d catch hate for having Segura. Didn’t expect it for Mitch. Mitch is what got me into standup so for that influence alone he goes on mine.

I'll say:

Eddie Murphy
Richard Pryor
George Carlin
Robin Williams

Rodney Dangerfield, Norm McDonald, Dave Chappelle can certainly make a case being on here, and I'm a huge Anthony Jeselnik guy so I wanna include him too.

Standup only? In terms of my side hurting from laughing so much . . .

Norm Macdonald
Bill Burr
Brian Regan (funniest person I’ve ever seen in person)
Richard Pryor

Regular comedians in film/TV (but also standup):

Jerry Seinfeld
Eddie Murphy
Louis C.K.
Steve Martin

Start carving Pryor and Carlin and we'll argue about the other two.

I'd pay good money to see Rickles and have probably watched more YouTube videos of him than anyone, but he wasn't a classic stand-up comedian.

I'll round out Rushmore with Rodney (a sure thing for me) and the 4th could be any one of four or so comedians depending on my mood. Today, it would be Joan Rivers. Tomorrow it could be Chappelle, Rock or Louis CK

His stand-up is a Time Machine.

His VHS, a Milk carton with his pic.

I thought Carlin had some witty quips and is infinitely quotable but didn’t think his standup is as top tier as remembered.

In that 80s-90s era I liked Stanhope, Murphy, Hedberg, or Kinison more.

All the love for Carlin and I don't understand it. He wasn't that funny. Just sounded angry and pretentious to me. Not rah-rah funny.

You're looking at the end of his career and not his career as a whole.

Carlin lived off of 3 really great bits. He's funny, obviously, but hilariously overrated. He was great at making his comedy sound like it was intellectual so folks always include him in these lists to sound/feel smart.

^^^^ That is a very broad stroke I'm painting with, but I stick by it. Maybe a better way to put it, is I think Carlin had a lot of fans that weren't really fans of stand-up.

Anyway

1. Pryor
2. Cosby (yes, I know) Just talking pure stand up here
3. Chappelle
4. Personal fave that probably doesn't belong....Steven Wright

What I appreciate about Carlin is that he was probably the master wordsmith of all the stand up comedians. Each word that Carlin said had a purpose and he didn’t really riff.
