Brad Pitt has been basically playing the same character for 30 years just in different scenarios and contexts.
He’s cool as shite, but he’s not much of an actor.
So you are saying Chad Feldheimer in Burn After Reading and Tyler Durden in Fight Club are basically the same character?
Interesting take.

I'll go with Cage as the worst. The most current one I loathe is Timothée Chalamet.
Favorites? Jack Nicholson, Ralph Fiennes, Anthony Hopkins, Tommy Lee Jones, Gene Hackman, Christopher Walken, Ed Harris, Tom Hardy.

To answer the OP, I’ll go with Johnny Depp.
Blow and Fear and Loathing say otherwise.

DiCaprio
Greatest over-actor all time

Yeah, Depp is a lot of shitty things, but bad actor ain't one of 'em.

Have to agree with you. Cage has had fair share of stinkers but his performance in Leaving Las Vegas was recognized as one of, if not the best of the 90s.

I couldn't disagree more.
He's fantastic in a variety of roles. He chooses weird movies, but he becomes the characters and is a really good actor.
Platoon
Cry Baby
Gilbert Grape
Edward Scissorhands
Donnie Brasco
Fear and Loathing
Blow
Chocolat
Pirates of the Caribbean
Once Upon A Time in Mexico
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Sweeney Todd
Finding Neverland
Public Enemies
Black Mass
etc.
Huge range and tons of talent. He just chooses weird roles and movies.

Dude, come on. Dude is an awesome actor.
The takes in this thread are fricking wild.

The fact that you list Charlie and the chocolate factory as a positive nullifies anything you have to say in the matter.

It wasn't a great movie, but his original take and commitment to that character were still impressive. Just giving an example of his range.
ETA:
And you can throw out that one and 5 more if you want from my list and my point still stands. Depp is a damn good actor.

It was garbage and pretending to be Michael Jackson is in no way impressive.

Samuel L. Jackson... perhaps the most one dimensional actor of all time.
Nope. Sam Elliot only plays Sam Elliot. Can't stand him and he has no upper lip. Guess that's why he keeps a mustache.

That's where I saw it. Freaked me out but even without the stache, he was just Sam Elliot. He's ruining Landman, too.

Jack Nicholson plays Jack Nicholson in everything HE’S in.
Feels like more people are considering on-screen persona than acting ability. The idea that Nicholson or Redford were bad at acting because they somewhat consistently maintained a specific persona throughout parts of their careers is wild. Do people here consider Cary Grant and James Stewart bad actors?
I believe it's fair to call Redford a better star than he was an actor, but not that he was a bad actor. Including Nicholson in this conversation, in any capacity, is absurd. Maybe if you only know his work from 2005-2010. I guess there are people who have only ever seen and are basing this opinion off of, say, Anger Management and The Departed. Or The Shining and The Bucket List, maybe.
I get the Nic Cage thing, assuming you've only seen the garbage, but he has almost 5 decades of work with plenty of non-garbage in each of those decades. I don't get Brad Pitt here. There isn't just one part that he takes. A 3-film stretch: Meet Joe Black right into Fight Club into Snatch. These are not the same. Another one: Inglorious Basterds, Tree of Life, Moneyball. Come on.

He doesn’t sport a stache in We Were Soldiers either. That’s the one that stands out to me
