Downhill came out early in 2020 and his new film, Eurovision Song Contest, apparently just came out on Netflix.

Neither have seemed to get any kind of traction.

It's amazing how a guy who ruled the 00s comedy scene is now almost irrelevant.

The eurovision movie has been out for 24 hours and was heavily promoted all over the internet. Let's give it a couple days.

Downhill got lost in the shuffle during the Disney Fox acquisition and got dumped off in late January with very little push. Eurovision Song Contest was supposed to release at the same time as the actual Eurovision (kind of like a Euro American Idol/America's Got Talent type show) but COVID killed that and it was bought by Netflix as a result. For whatever reason Netflix does frick all for promoting it's movies.

Downhill was another needless remake of a European film that was just okay...Force Majeure.

So it's not like he came out with Old School 2 and nobody noticed.

It was a movie that was going to have very little audience anyways. Have no idea why they remade it. Force Majeure is only 5 years old. It was another one of those, oh Americans don't want to read subtitles kind of remakes like the Drago Tattoo movie.

But even if you like Swedish movies, you're probably not going to get the subtle cultural humour. Just an awful choice of a film to remake for American audiences.

Downhill caught my attention from a preview but I haven’t got around to watching it yet, the only advertising from his new movie I’ve seen has been on Netflix.

I've never heard of Downhill. Was it made for American audiences? I remember reading about Eurovision as it was in production and I'm pretty sure it was being made for Netflix in Europe. Maybe Ferrell is popular over there and is making movies catered more to that audience.

Seems like this has been going on for a few years.

Didn’t his Sherlock Holmes film with him and John C Reilly bomb horribly a year or two back?

That's how it goes for most comedy actors. Seen Chris Rock in any blockbusters lately? Jim Carrey? Mike Myers? Hell even Adam Sandler has lost most of his star power.

We must be looking at different internets, because this thread is literally the first time that I had ever heard of the movie.

Adam Sandler signed a multi movie deal with Netflix. They fart one out about once a year. They also do pretty much zero promotion for that too. For the most part Netflix kind of just expects people to notice when they drop shite. Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, and House of Cards are the only things I can ever remember sustained ad campaigns for. Even the Marvel stuff seemed to mostly be pushed via word of mouth on social media.

Downhill was made for Americans as a remake of a decent Swedish film that most Americans have never seen.

If you read the plot of Force Majeure, I don't think that premise works for American audiences...plus I haven't seen Downhill but the humour in Force Majeure isn't overt...and that's why it sort of works. Basically Will Ferrell would be playing a giant pussy who doesn't give a crap about anyone but himself and then struggles to understand why he's a giant pussy.

European audiences understood such an internal struggle.

He makes a lot of shitty movies. And this is coming from someone that didn't hate Land Of The Lost.
