Reading between the lines the ogre has access to the gardens and was able to sneak people out through there. There was the first time when he brought Nynaeve to Rand and then presumably a 2nd time when Moraine asked for his help.

She’s not a prisoner.

Trust me when I say: that detail doesn’t matter.

That's a very good line of reasoning. If only they had thought to include that in the show so people didn't have to infer a Point B just for it to make sense on how the characters got from Point A to Point C.

I'm sure in the book they showed the entire picture and there were a few hoops to jump through to get everyone out of the city. But this episode the major thing happening was Moraine scheming to control a situation where she was being attacked from all sides. And that part was interesting. Then they yada yadaed over some of the details that should have been there so those missing details are what we're focusing on, even if they're unimportant in the big picture. It may be stupid but we haven't read the books and can only go where the show leads us.

I viewed the exit from the city being focused on as more to show the group decided to voluntarily rejoin together and go on a new journey. they already accomplished the goal of getting to the white tower they werent bound to rejoin moraine. less that they had to 'escape' from the city.

i dont think the escape was hard just that it be done swiftly and quietly. the cloaked people would pick up on the newcomers trickling out later and it would raise suspicions potentially causing some of the group to get held up or something.

Go to episode 4 and see if that grabs you. That seemed to be a good step forward and felt like the tedious set up parts were out of the way.

World-building... that's something major that is missing.

I have watched all the episodes, and still have very little knowledge about this world. Like, at all. I don't want to watch something else on Amazon to fill in the blanks, it needs to be done organically in the show

8 episodes is not enough. They needed 4 more episodes to tell the tale of 2 books.

I do agree that 4-6 were significant step ups.

7 and 8 were filmed long after the others due to Covid shutdown, so it'll be interesting to see if there's another jump in quality since they had almost a year to dissect the other episodes.

4 was a step up. I find 5-6 to be about the same as 1-3.

IIRC, the ogre said exactly that in one sentence that was easy to miss.

wait... we're almost 2 books in? I'd have guessed maybe 3-4 chapters

We aren’t. This story is very loosely book 1 (very loosely) with some small small elements of the prequel and books 2 (and even 3) thrown in.

So, watching the current episode...

These people are annoying

Intro- Wonder Woman kills all those evil men, even though she's pregnant and apparently starting labor.

They all enter the portal, and Matt turns and walks away. So of course, our drama queen kids accuse Moiraine of... something. Nevermind they all watched him turn around, it's somehow her fault.

Don't use the One Power (proceeds to use the One Power).

Random actor welcomes Ninja-dude to the new city, with awkwardly bad delivery... it's ok, we don't see him again.

Sits around talking about Moiraine like 7th graders, then "Shh, here she is".
Oh boy, emo-drama jealousy about Moley. Rand needs some Midol.

Wisdom chick finally gets laid with Ninja; maybe now she'll lose that huge chip on her shoulder.

Moley is the only one of the kids who seems capable of rational thought.

Okay, big reveal as to who is the Dragon Reborn,
-flashback to Wonder Woman... apparently she didn't kill ALL the men. And one of the few she doesn't, decides to take and raise her baby instead of killing her in revenge for her killing all his friends.

Off they go through a CGI thicket. Which, if you look just a little at it, seems to be just tiled onto the screen. Looks like 3 branches, then repeats like a clone brush. I've seen similar graphics on DOS video games (looks like AD&D).

When does this start becoming competently made? I'm really trying to hang in there, but starting to find myself laughing at it.

I'm finding myself dreading what Amazon is going to do with the upcoming Tolkien series. And I'm not even talking about it being "woke", I'm just hoping it's going to be competently edited and produced.

Like I said, I'm really, REALLY giving this show the benefit of the doubt, hoping things will click into gear.

It's supposedly a good story, and- let's be honest here- there ain't a lot of new series going right now. Especially if you consider something on a premium/pay service.

But I noticed, even Amazon's own ratings has this at 3.5 stars out of 5. That's taking into account however many book-readers there are out there who are happy with just anything, and probably a similar group who are happy to see any premium fantasy show. Or happy to see any new show on Prime. All of which basically confirms what we've been saying- this is mediocre, and clearly NOT the 'must-see event' series people hoped it would be.

The screenwriters are awful, no other way to put it. We constantly see the kids chafing and suspicious towards Moiraine, but there's been literally no reason for that (might be in the books, but it isn't in the show). Once she saves them in Ep 1, I've seen NO reason to fight her. She saves the village, she heals their wounded, she's shielding them from political fallout, she healed/exorcised Matt, she's basically done no wrong. And yet they bitch about her in every scene.
Sure, she's possibly bringing them (all but one) to their death, but in an attempt to save their entire universe; and she's told them that. And the only reason she endangers any of them has been that she wasn't able to figure out which one was the Dragon Reborn. Well, now we know, and the others are left safe.

If there's something in the books that justify their suspicions, the show is completely missing that. It makes the characters unlikeable bitches.

The editing is piss-poor, too. Show seems to have no rhythm, is herky jerky. I mentioned Lan's welcome into the new city... they focus in tight on some old guy, who makes just a cringey "welcome back, you great bloody bastard" comment. Like that's supposed to mean something... we never see the old guy again. And he's apparently the only white dude in the city, the rest are Asian. If we see that guy more and he's involved in telling Lan's background or something, it makes more sense. As it is, it came across almost like the town drunk wandered up to him.

Other editing gripes... does this show have a theme/musical score? There was a moment when we get some music with chanting, I haven't heard that before. It's like each episode has their own sound mix.

I brought up the poor CGI for the blight thicket, it's noticeable. Most games do a better job with stuff like that.

All of which just distract, when you definitely need immersion to buy into the story.

The reason those ratings are so low is largely because of book readers. Pissed off about a shite adaptation of a great book and then a shite production quality on top of that.

Book readers aren't happily clicking the thumbs up button on this shite, I can assure you. "Happy with just anything", my arse.
