To bring up one that hasn't been mentioned yet, check out Journey's End from 2017. It's a film version of a stage play, so big battle scenes are not to be found here. Rather, it focuses on the stress experienced by a small group of officers in the days leading up to a German offensive that they know is soon to come. I wouldn't classify it as one of the all-time great war movies, but I quite enjoyed it.

I keep meaning to watch All Quiet on the Western Front and haven't yet. I've heard it is very good.
The last two "great" war movies that I've seen are 1917 and Dunkirk. Both impacted me greatly.
Hacksaw Ridge was also good. From 2016.
But, as far as traditional, American war movies in the traditional old style, I'd have to go back to We Were Soldiers as the last really good one that I remember.

Band of Brothers is the Goat. The Pacific was solid. SPR is good.

Restrepo is more of a doc than a movie, but also good.

Was just coming to post this one. Unfortunately, Afghanistan and Iraq gave us several good docs showing the harsher side of it all.

Great movie.
I first saw it on a flight. I forgot my ear buds and watched the entire thing on subtitles. It was still great.
Although, much better on the return flight when I could listen to it.
Great story.

Lot easier for villain choices when movies didn’t require global ticket sales.

All Quiet on the Western Front was the last I saw that I thought was really good.
Wish they would make some new WW1/WW2 Naval movies that were based on actual battles.

Also liked Eye In The Sky.
Was that the movie with Helen Mirran as a British officer (maybe MI6 in a uniform as cover) and the guy who played Jesse Pinkman on Breaking Bad as a drone pilot in Nevada?
I saw it a long time ago, and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. But did make you face some of the moral ambiguity in the drone wars.

F-14 Tomcats
Terrain
Access from the Persian Gulf
Opportunity to buy non-NATO 5th Gen aircraft
Regime's desire to FAFO, with regards to nuclear capability
edit- why the downvotes on this?
The ONLY country to have F-14's besides the US, is Iran. That eliminates any Eastern Bloc country. And that plane is a major part of the storyline.
And as for terrain, it's generally assumed Iran is a desert like other Middle Eastern countries, but it's actually quite hilly.
As for the 5th Gen aircraft and the frick-around find out attitude, they were trying to buy stuff, and they've been, outside of North Korea, the only country trying to develop shite they're not supposed to have.

Every time I see reference to this movie, I get angry that they didn't even try to follow the source material.
I don't know why the studio bothered to pay for the right to call it World War Z.

I like Generation War, the German WW2 3 part miniseries. I have the Bluray and it doesn't play like anything made for TV. It plays like an epic movie, all 279 minutes.
It covers five young Germans through the war and all of the changes that occur to their lives and their beliefs. Some great battle scenes also.
I have watched it several times over the years and will watch it several more, God willing.
Yes, an old thread bump, and my first post here.
