Bring on the downvotes but I have to say the first Blair Witch.
Saw it opening night. The lights came on after the movie. People literally stood up and looked at each other like WTF? Was that real?? Of course it came out a few days later that it was fake but at the time people legitimately did not know. Adds a little extra pucker factor for that hot minute.

No, they held on to that narrative longer than a few days. I hated that screen shaking pile of shite. What’s crazy is Spielberg wanted to have the camera moving on the boat in Jaws. If it had been done like that I’d probably hate it too.

I agree with you, wholeheartedly. I feel the Blair Witch Project is one of the best horror flicks ever made. My future wife and I saw it on a date on its opening weekend; we believed everything we saw on the screen was real. The ending was a real gut-punch that stayed with us for days; you thought you'd just watched a snuff film.
I use this movie as a way of judging people. If someone says they don't like it, I assume they have no imagination. I thought it was beautifully executed.

I never had a favorite one because the slasher movies got old and you knew what was going to happen.
I watched the first Phantasm and it was different, confusing but I enjoyed more so than Halloween and Friday the 13th as it made you think as what was going on?

Growing up in the 50s, I also have a fondness for:
Frankenstein
Dracula
Wolfman
Creature From The Black Lagoon
Same here. I'd add "Them" about giant mutated ants.
"The Day The Earth Stood Still" with Michael Remy, Patricia Neal and Billy Gray
Some of those old movies are pretty campy, but fun to watch none the less. I always found Bela Lugosi to be a bit over the top with the hand gestures when playing Dracula.

Lots of good ones listed would like to add The Witch, yes I know it is aslow burn and not full of jump scares but just awesome film making

Re-Animator. Classic 80’s horror flick.

First Blair Witch is still awesome. The ending is chilling..
Also - I don’t understand how people still don’t get the ending. It’s literally laid out for you in the very beginning.

Hellraiser I, II and III. Also, the book Hellbound Heart which is what the first movie was based scared the shite out of me.

The original Haunting from 1962

My favorites. The Thing is #1, the others aren't really in order:
The Thing
Hellraiser
Hereditary
The Witch
Kill List
The Mist
REC
The Descent
Exorcist (and Exorcist 3)
Rare Exports (Norwegian?)
Trollhunter (Norwegian)
Texas Chain Saw Massacre (original and remakes)
The Hills Have Eyes (original and remakes)
Shaun of the Dead
Nightmare on Elm Street
The Host (Korean)
Midsommar
Cabin in the Woods
Rosemary's Baby
Silence of the Lambs
Alien
Night of the Living Dead
Wicker Man (original)
Dead Snow (Norwegian?)
Sheitan (French)
High Tension (French)
Pandorum
Event Horizon
Last House on the Left (original and remake)
I Spit on Your Grave (original and remake)
Calvaire (French)
Probably some that are missing but I think those are all solid. I love Kubrick and liked The Shining but I wouldn't call it a favorite.

There was some old Grizzly Adams dude sitting in front of us (the marketing was so good it attracted viewers who normally wouldn't go to it, but there was that curiosity factor that this movie was being touted as a game-changer.)
30 minutes in to the movie, he gets up, looks around and yells "frick this shite" and walks out.
Then in the next 20 minutes, more people walked out. I think in the end it was me and my gf and 5 other people.

I’m a fan of classic horror, even if it isn’t that “scary” in the modern sense.
A few notable exceptions:

When I’m at my computer, I’ll bump this thread with a huge list of threads I made a while back. Full of some great horror suggestions.
