Goodfellas. great movie but some act like it's god's gift to cinema.

Who says that?

I wouldn't say it's God's gift to cinema, however, the issue with Goodfellas is it's the most direct comparison to the Godfather (nearly similar names and all), and provides a more gritty, realistic take on the mob/mafia concept. I actually prefer it to the Godfather (and I'm not saying from a film history or film critique perspective. Objectively Godfather is the better film), I just prefer the more grounded morals. Where Godfather celebrates and often romanticizes mob life, Goodfellas breaks it down, turns it over, and reveals the amount of evil there is in it. Almost every major beat in the film is brutal, from Pesci's violent moments, to his demise, DeNiro's later reactions to Henry and Karen. None of those lead to good ends, not even for Henry.

It's the whole play on "a somebody" vs. "a nobody." To me, it's the more culturally important film. Or at least should be.

I was going to say Titanic, but after reading the thread, I see many others have already mentioned it. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks it sucks.

On that note, I'll add Top Gun.

I also thought the LotR trilogy was boring as hell.

There are so many grossly overrated movies IMO that I wouldn't even know where to begin or how to rank them.

Anything and everything John Wayne ever did

The Searchers is probably Wayne's best movie. Wayne sort of plays against type, he's not really a hero and he's not terribly likeable. He's a virulent racist and the only reason he's going on the search obstensibly is to put a bullet in Natalie Wood's head because she's probably been "corrupted " by the Comanche
