Inception
The Matrix
The Life Aquatic
The Thin Red Line

I'm not saying they're bad, I just don't think they rate the knob-slobbering they get on this board and elsewhere.

Movies are subjective, but I can’t believe how many terrible opinions are in this thread.

My answer is Titanic.

Saving Private Ryan. It was horribly boring after the magnificent opening scene. Actually, I've found an overwhelming majority of Spielberg movies a chore to get through since Schindler's List. Lincoln was so dreary and unwatchable. Even DDL couldn't save that mess. It's like Spielberg took the criticism from some of his fellow filmmakers very personally and completely changed his directing style to be a more "serious" filmmaker. Well it hasn't worked.

Still have not watched it. I am proud of this achievement or lack thereof.

That might be now.

But apparently people were basically "OMG, what is this?"

I guess you could maybe say that it's overrated because a lot of the praise was on the visuals at the time - which have been surpassed.

Story is pretty thin. But 1960's audiences apparently thought it was the most visually stunning film they'd ever seen. And rightfully so for 1968.

2001: A Space Odyssey is one of those films that you have to watch numerous times and you have to watch it in a movie theater for it to click. The first time I watched 2001 was on DVD and I didn't really like it. The second time I watched it was on TCM and it wasn't much better. I gave it a third shot by attending an IMAX screening in DC and I came away thinking it was one of the greatest films of all-time. It was such an incredibly visionary experience and the non-narrative storytelling works so much better in a big screen format. Watching it in a TV screen just does not compare.

Platoon.

I looked it up to see the IMDb rating. Typed in "Plato... and the suggestions were, in order, "Dana Plato" (of course), "Platoon" (naturally), and "Full Metal Jacket" (because IMDb's search algorithm clearly likes fricking with us.)

The Social Network - every internet film buff wants to pretend this was the most masterful screenplay of all time

In fairness, it is an excellent screenplay. Watch the first 5 minutes.

The Shape of Water and Birdman are two recent Best Picture winners that have to be up there.

It's A Wonderful Life

Only well known because the copyright lapsed and it got played every Christmas.
Essentially, this is true

I remember when I was a kid in the early 80s, just before the constant airings of IAWL began. I saw an interview w/Burt Reynolds where he cited it as one of his favorite movies. That was the first time I'd even heard of it.

When it first came out it was barely a radar blip
That's not really true. It made a profit and got a number of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. But it didn't establish itself into the mass consciousness. That only came in the '80s w/the constant TV exposure.

If James Dean doesn't die, nobody is talking about this film.
I'm not going to deny that Dean's early death enhanced his cult. But that's true of many cults.
