I think you start out with this question: What movies are rated? So I'll use the imdb 250 as a guide of where films fit in the general heirarchy:

How in the holy hell is a movie as terrible as Life Is Beautiful in the top 25? That's the clear answer.

It's A Wonderful Life

Only well known because the copyright lapsed and it got played every Christmas. When it first came out it was barely a radar blip.

The Godfather has to be one of the most overrated.

Aside from all the buzz surrounding the movie's release, I don't ever really hear anything about Avatar anymore...

If your point is that it's such an afterthought it's no longer overrated, I can probably agree to that.

But it was massively hyped and widely celebrated, and the fact that now nobody even thinks about it is a sign it was exceptionally overrated at the outset.

The Blair Witch Project

Vertigo (Good movie but not Hitchcock's ultimate masterpiece like every film buff claims it to be. That would be either Rear Window or North by Northwest.)

Shane

Midnight Cowboy
Taxi Driver
as far as both of those are concerned I have a hard time being really enthusiastic about movies that make me feel like hanging myself on a shower rod after watching them. Sad movies are okay but there is a difference between sad and depressing/bleak as hell.

The Godfather Part II--tried to shove two movies into one movie. The young Vito storyline should have been The Godfather Part II and the continuation of the Michael Corleone storyline should have been The Godfather Part III. That way the actual The Godfather Part III never gets made.

Not that it isn't good; it is. But a lot people talk as if it's one of the greatest films ever ... which it is not.

Shawshank Redemption.

Very good movie..and very entertaining. But I feel like a lot of people put this movie in their top 5 just because it was (is?) on tv all the time when they were growing up.

I agree. Heath Ledgers performance was great and worth watching for some of his scenes but over all I just thought it was allright.
