While I will hate it when he goes, it won't be that much of a shock. Hell, 95+ is damn good run.

Robin Williams

His equally shocked me and didn't at the same time.

I remember seeing an interview with him a few months before and actually thinking that he sounded like someone suicidal. And then it happened.

It was eery.

Grew up on Robin Williams movies. Definitely up there.

I was a huge Linkin Park fan in high school, so Chester Bennington

His death was pretty damn tragic and completely avoidable.

Literally the first one I thought of too when I saw the thread title.

Anthony Bourdain's was the most shocking to me. Never knew he had mental illness to the point of even considering suicide. He seemed to have a great life on top of that. It's still shocking when I stop and think about it.

Same with Chris Farley, but he was more tragic in how tortured he seemed by his own self-image and his self-destruction

I had just read a cover story about em in Rolling Stone (I think) It was pretty much about out of control he was and died pretty soon after.

One reason that it didn't come as a big surprise to me.

1st person I thought of as well. Mainly when I found out how he died. Ledger and Irwin were pretty shocking as well but an overdose or accident werent quite as shocking as a suicide for me personally.

I have to agree with many of the ones listed.

Kobe would be #1

Chester Bennington / Chris Cornell

Robin Williams / Phil Hartman / Chris Farley

Anton Yelchin is one with the way he went out.

Definitely Chester Bennington for me. I don’t really get upset over people I don’t know dying, but his death is an exception. Linkin Parks music was such an important part of my early high school years and really captured my emotions at an awkward time in my life. Always have a big soft spot for that band and Chester.

The death of a morbidly obese guy with a killer drug and alcohol habit shocked you?

I hate that he was gone too soon, but there wasn't anything "shocking" about that.

Princess Diana.

I was out at a friend's party when the news broke. I just kind of stood there for a few minutes thinking that this has to be some sort of April Fool's joke in September.

I was angriest at the loss of Hartman because he was taken from us by a crazy wife. Goddam!

Agreed. Hartman is the most shocking to me because it was so senseless and out of nowhere.

Candy and Farley came to mind as well, but they weren't as shocking just because of their physical conditions. Candy wasn't as self-destructive as Farley, but was still a smoker and drinker, on top of his eating habits.

Anthony Bourdain. It wasn’t so much him dying that was shocking to me but that he committed suicide. You’d think someone who gets paid to travel the world and experience all the food and culture couldn’t possibly be unhappy. Just goes to show depression can be such a silent evil.
