Phil Hartman and Kobe have to be the two most WTF celebrity deaths ever. No drug overdoses, no suicide, no driving crazy. Murdered by your wife and dying in a helicopter crash.

Chris Cornell’s death really got to me. I couldn’t listen to Soundgarden for at least a year afterward. It just bummed me out.
Aye.

When I go down the rabbit hole I mentioned prior with Chester and Chris Cornell, I always listen to Audioslave - "Like a Stone" YouTube and Chester/Cornell "Crawling Live" - Youtube

It's not necessarily a fun trip, but these guys were amazing.

I was in high school when Aaliyah, Left Eye, and Dale Earnhardt died. I wasn’t a NASCAR fan but happened to be watching the Daytona 500 when it happened, and I wasn’t really a fan of Aaliyah or TLC but all 3 deaths sent shockwaves through my school. Very weird times.

Skip Carey wasn’t really a celebrity but his death hit home as well since I grew up watching the Braves on TBS every night

Bon Scott, Keith Moon, and John Bonham. AC/DC, The Who and Led Zepplin were my three favorite bands and losing all three in 2 years gave me this strange sense that music was very ethereal. I was lucky enough to have had a cool uncle who so I had seen all three live. It started my desire to collect moments by seeing live music, if I listed all the artists I have seen that are dead now I would sound like a gang member recounting the bodies.

I also decided that if I died of "misadventure" it was going to be a better story than going to sleep in a Renault.

That's funny and sad too.

As a person who was very much into the mid-80s college band vibe (REM, U2, The Smiths, etc) and turned into full late 80s early 90s Grunge, I could probably count easier listing who is still alive from that 90s scene.

The death toll is remarkable. Cobain, Dolores, Layne, Weiland, etc. It's not related, but many people probably don't know of Ian Curtis and Joy Division, but it's what I think about with that group of artists and time.

I’m older than I thought if it takes 5 pages to get John Lennon mentioned.

probably John Lennon being shot in the back by a "fan" who had gotten an autograph earlier the same day.

I'd put Payne Stewart in there as well. Plane lost cabin pressure while in the air and everyone on board died of oxygen deprivation and the plane ultimately crashed.

Stevie Ray Vaughn. I was beginning to learn how to play guitar at that time.

River Phoenix back in 90s. Only a few years older than me and gone.

Next was Curt Cobain. Nirvana was everywhere at the time.

Leif Garrett and George Jones. Talk about a shock. Never saw either of those two coming.

He was 81, that should never be shocking.
