When Walter Peyton was seen in public when his son committed to play football at The U, people started saying he might have aids. He held a press conference to say he had bile duct cancer, and needed a kidney transplant. The way he looked, especially the weight loss, was shocking, and then he was gone. The press conference was in February of 199, & died on November 1st, 1999.

YouTube video of him talking about being sick & needing a kidney transplant

ETA:

He played his last game in January of 1988. Elected to HOF in January of 1993.You would occasionally hear about him opening a restaurant, or doing something for his foundation that helped abused and neglected kids. The rumors started about him maybe having aids. He did the video, and is dead nine months later.

I lived in Mississippi when he was at Jackson State, followed his career with the Bears, Knew he had bought an Indy car racing team after he retired, and then boom, that video of him having to come out and share his health problems, because of aids rumors is on my TV. I just felt so sorry for him.

It's always musicians dying that bums me out for awhile.

Yup, it's musicians for me too, starting with Randy Rhoads.

Randy Rhoads (dumb plane crash)
Stevie Ray Vaughan (helicopter crash)
John Denver (dumb plane crash)
Michael Hedges (car crash)

Although I was a Queen fan as well, for some reason Freddie Mercury didn't shock me because I was expecting it.

And more recently musical heroes from my youth who are dying from stuff you get in old age.

Neil Peart (brain cancer)
Edward Van Halen (tongue cancer)

I remember seeing an interview with him a few months before and actually thinking that he sounded like someone suicidal. And then it happened.

Any idea who had the interview? I am interested to watch.

JFK Jr. was a shocker. You always thought that somehow, someway, someday, he was going to be President.

I don't remember where it was. For all I know, it may have even been something I read.

I just remember coming away from it not having a good feeling about Robin Williams' mental health.

Well since affected was changed to shocked my reply makes no sense. Not sure why the drastic change in title.

Shocked is what I meant. However it affected you doesn’t change things.

I'll second Tom Petty. His best days of music were behind him, but he still had plenty of encores left in him.

I got to see him a couple of times, but passed on a couple of more later. Wished I hadn't.

No dark pun intended...but he was a dying breed.

the death of an 80 year old with a highly publicized form of arguably the worst type of cancer possible shocked you?

It's really just semantics, I think most posters took the thread as an impact type of way. That could mean affected, surprised, etc.

Definitely Chester Bennington for me. I don’t really get upset over people I don’t know dying, but his death is an exception. Linkin Parks music was such an important part of my early high school years and really captured my emotions at an awkward time in my life. Always have a big soft spot for that band and Chester.
I get you for sure. I'm a bit older than your experience, but was a fan - my son was a huge fan, so Chester really hit him.

There's a rabbit hole you can go down with Chester and Cornell which is both terribly sad, but also ends up being very appreciative of their talent, relationship and struggles.

shocked the most? Probably Heath Ledger. That one came out of nowhere for me.

Impacted me the most? Probably Chris Cornell. He was one of the few musicians to recently die while being still young enough to be putting out interesting and relevant music.

Chris Cornell’s death really got to me. I couldn’t listen to Soundgarden for at least a year afterward. It just bummed me out.

I was so sad that I would never see Soundgarden again.
