I wonder if we all would dislike it so much had they not put in Easter eggs of Season 1? It’s just blasphemy. Gave us hope that maybe the quality from the first season would be back.

this is obviously subjective, but i dont know...i think 2 was better. i need to do a rewatch of season 2 i think. i really dont remember hating it as much as everyone else, but maybe i'm misremembering. at least the cast in season 2 was entertaining to watch, which in my opinion already puts it ahead of season 4. i remember the plot being convoluted and hard to follow, but...i dont think it was more convoluted than this season.

Did you ot watch season 2? Season 2 was a bigger pile of crap than this.
season 2's biggest problem was that it was immediatley following 1 which was an impossible act to follow. Nic P took years to put together his vision for 1 and it was a massive success so they were like "cool..do it again". Yeah it stunk and was also not near as good as 3...but man it was still so much better than this. 2 at least still tried to be "true detective" even if it fell flat. This show, as mentioned many times by many people, just feels like some other completely different show entirely that somehow got true detective added into the title. Honestly Idon't think people would even CARE that it's this bad if it was just called "night country" by itself. But by attaching itself to the TD franchise it's opened itself up for this backlash.
And while none of this season has been particular good, this last episode completely jumped the shark of even being semi-good. No real direciton, nothing really happening, shitty subplots, people we don't GAF about, recycled tropes repeated endlessly, shoehorned symbols from season 1, unncessary references to season 1, the sudden decision to be a jump-scare show apparently, and cringe-inducing dialoge (you're in night country now!)...I mean I could go on. S2 wasn't good but it was Citizen Kane compared to this pile.

even as of right now, pending the ending, I would watch this season over again before I would season 2
that is...an interesting take to be sure. This season is seemingly getting worse by the episode and by all accounts doesn't evn come close to sticking any kind of landing.

i found it pretty funny that Pizolatto was on a high horse about tying into season one yet he forgets that he wrote an absolute stinker of a season.
When people hear the words "true detective" they think about season 1, let's be honest here. Id' be pissed to if my life's greatest achievement was now associaited iwth this shite. And even if he did write a stinker to go along with season 1, that'd still put him batting like .750 with how good S1 was. This writer/director/producer/showrunner hasn't done shite.

As of now I'm ranking the seasons:
1
3
2
4
1
3
2
4

Yea I mean I didn't hate it, it just wasn't good TV imo. I wouldn't say I hate this season either, like season 2, it just really isn't that good.

For the most part. I give Vaghn props for taking on a serious role but he just wasn't good as a crime boss. Nice effort, but just kind of fell flat. Even Taylor Kitsch, whom I really like, was very bland. I liked most all of the actors, but they were pretty miscast.

Haven’t read the thread but does anybody else think this kinda sucks? I fell asleep during the last episode and am kinda over it. I find myself getting distracted every episode because it’s so slow. Had high hopes. They’ll never match the first season

I don't think it will get that absurd, but my guess is that the killer refers to the caves as Carcosa and/or Rose's real last name will wind up being revealed as Childress or Tuttle and the university she was professing at will be LSU (maybe Tulane). And/or she could be Rust's mom who abandoned him.

I agree that that is an impossible task, but that wasn't at all it's worse problem. It's story line was completely muddled/convoluted, numerous dumb story lines in general, characters that weren't interesting at all (even though they were good actors), a forgettable setting, numerous miscasts, Nic making a big mistake in essentially pushing out the director for season 1, and and ending where your main reaction was just "wut? lol".

Come on man, S2 isn't Citizen Kane compared to Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, much less this.

I thought Ep4 was better than Ep3. I haven't read any spoilers about the ending and at this point, I don't expect them to stick the landing, but neither did S2. So it's not like that's going to be something S2 has over this.

This isn't going to change ANYBODY'S opinion of S1. Like nobody. Everybody already views these as basically seperate mini series anyway.
You can go back and look at the Night Country Trailer threads/other threads prior to the season and a lot of people were excited about tying into S1. I'm not saying everybody, but a lot of people were. It got people's hopes up that it might actually be good so it's obviously a disappointment but plenty of people were looking forward to that aspect.

Actually not a bad direction. Main issue I see is that her character isn’t listed as being in any more episodes. However the sketchy cleaning lady with 2 missing fingers is shown to be in the finale.

There is no direct timeline crossover between TDS1 and S4, so whatever connection Lopez created will be completely her own.

Thats what I think, but don't know if that would be a roll eye throwback like the critic claimed.
Its gotta be out there, because that wouldn't be much different than Rust's dad or the Tuttles financing the site.
I think Childress makes an appearance of some sort.

And its a damn shame she chose to try to interject S1 into this...

Did anyone else speculate on what the callback to S1 that the write claims is in the season finale and made him roll his eyes and laugh?
I’m guessing they roll out the “time is a flat circle” line and it make zero sense.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the end of this season is going to leave me about as pissed off as I was many years ago sitting in a theater at the end of “Lady In The Water”. It sucked the whole way through but I kept telling myself, “Just wait until the end. It’s going to be awesome.” It most certainly wasn’t.

Season 2 caught vitriol because it was a big letdown after Season 1, but I'm not sure it was this bad.
Episode 4 was slightly better than me, insofar as I didn't fall asleep, but barely.

Season 2 had the same issues as season 4 (too many characters, too much going on, etc.), but it was an actual detective show.
The other big issue with Season 2 is that it's like they took Rust's nihilism and negativity (which was seen as weirdo/isolating stuff in season 1) and applied it EVERYWHERE. Well, guess what, season 4 has that, too

Aside from this season being terrible, my other takeaway is that Jodie Foster is a really, really bad actress.

Saw a video of McConaughey talking about exactly this yesterday. Someone asked him if he liked Season 2, to which he said he did, but he liked Season 1 better and thinks it was the best series he has ever seen (and he acknowledged the bias he has). Said his issue with Season 2 was that in Season 1 you had Marty bringing us back to earth from all of Rust's crazy talk, like being the audience in a way saying "WTF is Rust talking about?", but in Season 2 you just don't have that at all.
Posted on 2/7/24 at 7:23 am to VolSquatch
Season 1 also had a lot of humor in the dialogue between Marty and Rust, there’s none of that here.
