I happen to think this movie, while slightly flawed, is incredible.

Same here. Yeah, it almost without question will be, and I expect quite a few critics saying they had an immature knee jerk reaction to it. I know alot of critics loathed the format of it, but that's not going to be a remote issue in 5 months when it comes to Blu-Ray. They merely judged it by the format and not the things that actually matter, like story, characters, and what the film does right. I was perplexed when reading the reviews because it seemed like he succeeded in doing exactly what needed to be done.

The thing is we just saw the first 1/3 of the film really. Its not really a trilogy even if its billing itself as one. Richard Roeper hated the first two, but then when he saw the third and saw it as a finished product, he quickly changed his opinion of the trilogy and declared it a masterpiece. I'm actually counting on liking this movie more once the final film comes out.

I think once the sequels come out, the opinion of the first one will increase dramatically.

I enjoyed the heck out of the Hobbit.

Sure, it has some flaws.

But it was fun. Just like the book. And I like that they are going to make a trilogy out of it. Some books just don't translate well in one installment.

only slightly flawed? really?

its a B- at best. Probably a C/C+

the lighting is terrible, the pacing is awful, the tone is all over the place, and it has some surprisingly weak CG/composite work.

I just don't understand how the 48 FPS hate. It's a choice, and like you said, won't matter in 5 months

Sounds like you are regurgitating something you read TBH.

I do, however, agree here.

So I've been under a rock I guess. What's the big deal with 48 fps?

BTW, I saw it in 3D IMAX. It was great. Loved th emain dwarf and Bilbo wasn't nearly as annoying as Frodo/Sam.

Blame that on the 3-D. Guarantee this isn't a problem on Blu-Ray.

the pacing is awful

Because you saw the first 1/3 of a single film. The pacing is designed so that all 3 turn into a single film like "The Lord of the Rings".

Its far more lighthearted than LotR. If it were a faithful adaptation and it had to be in the same context of the original trilogy, then yeah its not going to have the tone be bounced around.

and it has some surprisingly weak CG/composite work.

Can't really think of any.

This is one of the few complaints I have. The pacing is very inconsistent but given the subject & the director I don't see it as a huge drawback

The other complaints aren't valid particularly the lighting.

Not to derail this thread or anything but...can we address why the hawks don't just drop them off at the lonely mountain instead of a rocky outcrop like 50 miles away?

Thanks Ill hang up and listen.

I went in hoping to love it and I was pretty disappointed in it. I've gone into why in some detail so I won't rehash that here.

I will say I loved Fellowship of the Ring from the get go without having to wait for the 2nd and 3rd installments. So, I hope you're right and the 2nd and 3rd installments of the Hobbit somehow lift the first one up (it did get better towards the end). But I still wish they had been able to make it more enjoyable (for me anyway) on it's own merits.

I envy those of you who loved it. I was so hoping to and expecting to going in.

They're not hawks. They're eagles.

They are described as a sentient race that is proud. They don't like to ferry people around. They also don't go near the lonely mountain because of smaug and also because they distrust men, and the men in dale have bows and arrows.

Absolutely not. I didn't even read any reviews before I saw it b/c I want to avoid potential spoilers. I cant remember what movie it was but I once read a review where the person hated the movie enough that they gave away the ending out of spite. Since then I avoid them other than to see a RT overall score. (I want to say it was Lisa Schwarzbaum from EW but I can't remember)

and TBH, you sound like a fanboy trying to protect your precious when you completely discount a persons opinion like that without any discussion on why you disagree.

Not saying you are but I do video production for a living so I know a little about the things that I dinged the movie for.

putting it on BluRay isn't going to help crappy lighting. If anything it will make it look even worse. It is what it is and it wasn't very good.

Regardless, I shouldn't have to wait for it to hit BR for it to not look like like I am watching a stage play.

sorry, that isn't a valid excuse. While they all form one long piece it is still 3 individual films that should be able to hold up as such.

IMO the pacing could have been greatly aided had Thorin's back story been moved to the front of the film following the intro rather than sticking it in the middle.

I don't care if that is how it was in the book, these are different mediums and Bilbo could have learned the back story simply by one of the characters taking him aside and telling it all off screen as Thorin looked off in the distance.

You can still have the lighthearted stuff BUT IMO it was simply not balanced well. The biggest offender was the portrayal of the Brown Wizard. The way the actor portrayed him was very jarring. It felt like he belonged in a completely different movie and TBH I think he would have looked off even in a Harry Potter flick. He felt like something out of a stage play and that isn't acceptable for this film series considering how everything else had been played up to this point.

One example is pretty much every time we saw the Brown Wizard riding his sleigh it looked like complete shite. Not b/c of the rabbits pulling it either. The up close shots were not combined with the CG well at all. IMO it looked just as bad as the dino stampede from Jackson's King Kong. It took me out of the movie to see blatant green screen like that.

Uhh, yes, lighting IS a valid complaint. Lighting is VERY important when making a film. Poor lighting can destroy a movie. Take Indiana Jones 4 for instance. The very first thing I noticed about that movie was the lighting was dog shite at it blatantly looked like it was shot on a set in front of a green screen.

again, I do this for a living so its not like I'm just repeating shite from a review. I saw it with several people from work and every single one of them singled out the lighting as odd at best with most thinking it was terrible.

no, I'm sorry but the lighting was not good throughout the movie. It just wasn't. Biggest offender was was in Bilbo's house with the dwarfs.

good for you, I work in film for a living. So you are wrong.

AMS Pictures, Reel FX, and Malone Pictures (all in DFW) are places I have worked or currently work for.
