Mulan? Aladdin and Beauty and the beast substantially over Mulan…

As a 90s kid whenever I find someone touting Mulan at the top of lists (it’s a fine movie) I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. I think it must just be a hipster “actually mulan is the best Disney film” take.

Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King are like THE tentpole animated movies from that Renaissance era along with The Little Mermaid. and if you say otherwise you’re doing a thing.

Also randomly imposing a combo Pixar/Disney shared ranking is punitive to the later generations.

it's odd the shite people find to complain about as they get old

OP I'll help you out. If you cut off the 2nd half of each decade your list would look like this

1970s 6.8/10
The Aristocats (1970)
Robin Hood (1973)

1980s 7.9/10
The Fox and the Hound (1981)

1990s 9.9/10
The Lion King (1994)
Toy Story (1995)

2000s 9.7/10
Finding Nemo (2003)

2010s 8.8/10
Frozen (2013)

2020s 7.0/10
Onward (2020)
Luca (2021)
Inside Out 2 (2024)

Robin Hood (1973)

I watched this movie a dozen times as a kid, I swear.

The Little Mermaid (1989)

Beginning of the Great Disney Renaissance.

2010s had some amazingly popular movies, even if they weren't quite as good. I don't think anyone can claim Frozen is a "failure" even if they don't think it's as good was earlier movies.

I guess we get to see if the missteps of the late 2010s / early 2020s are in the rearview or if Disney continues to just stumble over themselves.

The Voice Acting from Robin Hood is unreal. Robin, Little John, The Sheriff, Prince John, Friar Tuck, Alan a Dale, Sir Hiss, Trigger and Nutsy, the mouse couple. I could go on and on.

Mulan was no where nearly as good as Beauty and the Beast. It was not as popular either.

Onward was way better than it should’ve been. Really like that one.

And Luca is awesome. I’m biased because that was one of my son’s favorite movies when he was around 2, so we watched it all the time. But it’s really good.

Coco should be on your list though. It is top tier Pixar.

Yep Onward is incredible. Especially if you get a lot of the references they throw in.

Luca gets on my nerves I just don't like Luca's friend at all, and the obviously "they are closeted gay" thing that the producers obviously thought would be subtle is not at all subtle.

Coco is top tier Pixar, absolutely.

As an adult I view it in the same vein as Toy Story, Lion King and Aladdin from when I was a kid.

Agree on the 9.9/10 rating. Probably too low of a rating if anything.

Almost impossible to rank.

The Rescuers Down Under (criminally underrated), Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, James and the Giant Peach, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules,, A Bugs Life, and Toy Story 2 would all be good top 3 options but I'd probably agree with your top 3. Maybe Rescuers Down Under or Toy Story 2 over Mulan.

Disney wasn't really a big deal for Gen X. We kind of fell in the fallow period in between the heydey of the old movies and the modern resurgence. We had Star Wars, Spielberg, animated shows, toys, etc. but Disney was pretty much off the radar.

90's kid checking in. I don't think I've ever heard a person say they think Mulan is the best Disney film. it is however, a very very good Disney film. I personally like it quite a bit better than Aladdin and equally as much as Beauty and the Beast. Music is certainly more memorable than Aladdin, not as good as Beauty and the Beast though for sure.

Yeah 100%. Both Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast are continually at the top of all lists. Mulan is fine, but it pales in comparison to those two.

Toy Story 2 was in 1999 and it’s way better than Mulan and can be argued is better than the original Toy Story.

Mulan is in line with the other 90s moves like Hercules, Hunchback, Pocahontas. and Tarzan.

The 90s were definitely 10/10 on the rating

Let’s get down to business while great got a weird resurgence over the last 5-10 years.

A whole new world was the first Disney song to go to number 1 on the billboard charts and the only one (including let it go) to go number 1 until we don’t talk about Bruno.

Downplaying Aladdin is silly.
