Just an observation and my personal opinion, but I think that much of the Rings of Power hate comes from Game of Thrones fans who have been arguing with their nerdy friends in real life that Game of Thrones is better than LOTR.

Me and my little brother have been doing it for years. I'll tell him that Game of Thrones is just a low budget bootlegged LOTR, and he'll tell me no way and that Game of Thrones is better.

Apparently for many people it's a binary decision. That's fine and too each their own, but if I'm a Game of Thrones devotee I'm not going to take time out of my day to bombard dedicated Rings of Powers threads about how much Rings of Power sucks.

It's Star Wars vs Star Trek all over again.

I think it's fine to like LOTR more but the shows and books aren't similar at all to each other. LOTR is good vs evil. The whole theme of GOT is everyone is grey and has reasons for doing good or bad things.

It hasn't been a very good show, let's be honest. I am not a big LOTR fan, I enjoy the material but I haven't read the books and am not very much invested in it by any means. Only seen the movies and most haven't seen more than once or twice. I went into the show knowing absolutely nothing and it has not been impressive.

Is it the worst show of all time? No. It still isn't very good though. Couple that with the die hard fans expectations for what they want of something they care deeply about, and you get their reaction. It makes perfect sense. I had many of the same reactions with much of the Star Wars material that has come out.

As a fan of both sets of books and their adaptations I can say HOD is a more watchable show even with the more dour characters.

Tv shows, books, movies, what exactly are you talking about?
Observe more, and get back to the thread.

I think people who hate the show fall into 3 categories

1. The people who hate it because of politics. No need to delve into this too much, this group was going to hate it no matter what because a) “woke Amazon/Bezos” made it and b) casting black actors into white roles. Just another battleground in their culture war

2. Lore purists. This show isn’t following Tolkien’s writing, so it’s sucks to this group. Fair enough, these people existed with Jackson’s movies too, but not as widespread/vocal because of what the internet was at the time

3. Those who just didn’t like the show. It wasn’t perfect or even close. The pacing was a mess. Dialogue was often clunky. Etc. All fair criticisms.

I’d buy the GoT super fan’s rivalry theory more if GoT hadn’t butchered its last two seasons and turned off so many people.

As big of a Game of Thrones fan as I was, I never thought it was better than Lord of the Rings. It may have had more nuanced characters, but that’s it.

Or maybe rings of power is just a poorly done flop.

But it isn’t. Most Game of Thrones fans are also fans of Lord of the Rings. It’s just Game of Thrones brought in people that weren’t typically fans of high fantasy.

Maybe the Rings of Power just suck?

Have you considered that possibility?

(Most of the criticism I see about Rings of Power comes from die hard Tolkien fans, most of whom DGAF about Martin.)

Pretty much all the Rings of Power hate stems from them spending a shitload of money to acquire LOTR intellectual property, then hiring a bunch of writers who aren't Tolkien fans or fantasy writers and inexperienced showrunners to write a show that weaves in all their biases rather than reflect a true good fantasy story in the setting that millions of people love.

It is simply not easy to write good fantasy, so the story sucks. It's amplified because instead of being some random shitty story, they've bastardized a beloved series in the process.

Hard to argue with this. GOT thru Season 6 was a masterpiece of television history.

As one of this site's biggest RoP critics, I'll lay it out like this.

I've read LoTR books, but I'm not a lore fanatic.

I loved Jackson's LoTR films, though aspects of the third film never sat well with me (scrubbing bubbles army of the dead). I hated the Hobbit films.

I loved seasons 1-5 of GoT, but noticed a decline in the subsequent seasons to ultimately loathe season 8, just like everyone else. I was not overly enthused about any spinoffs b/c of how bad season 8 was.

When the showrunners of HoD began to talk about the same dynamics (modern audience, blah blah virtue signally blah) I was ready to dismiss it as well. Big difference here is HoD is actually well written and acted, despite the strange aging/character replacements in this show.

My alarms went off when they began to talk about making a modern day vision for everyone to enjoy, as if everyone couldn't/didn't enjoy the original works. Throw in the constant fan attacks and you have the hatred.

I have come to enjoy aspects of RoP that appeal to my inner MST3K troll. The show is simply terrible.

HoD is actually well written, directed, and acted. RoP is not.

Not to mention, GOT actually has legit actors and much better writing.

ROP writing is pretty shitty, and i haven't found a likeable character yet. Granted, i've only watched 1.5 episodes so far. The first episode made me abandon it for a few weeks. 2nd isn't much better. ROP is essentially the Hobbit type acting. They try to mix in serious tones but throw in off the wall whimsical type story telling that completely kills whatever mood they were going for. Not to mention, i am BORED watching ROP. I haven't been bored watching HOD yet.
