Well that’s fricking terrifying
Yep. That’s where the concept for the fungus in the game came from. Cordyceps is the genus that includes those parasitic fungi. They consume/replace the host tissue over time and force the host insect (by literally taking over the body’s movement) to die in a location advantageous for spreading the spores once the fungus finally sprouts fruit from the insect’s head. It even forces the insect to bite into a leaf vein to keep it in place after it dies.
The fact that it actually exists in nature makes it pretty terrifying stuff. The “zombie bite” aspect and the ability of the fungus to survive in humans was obviously made up for the games but still.

If it were spread by spores you would have to wear a mask and constantly sanitize clothes to keep spores off. The game doesn't take into account for spores lasting longer than a few minutes. While spores makes more sense from a fungi perspective it would make it less likely that anyone would survive.

Poria fungus destroys buildings in real life. It's getting more common in the US. It starts from roots and spreads into all the wood in the house causing rapid decay.
Something similar would explain the buildings collapse and decay in this world.

Just finished and really enjoyed it. Excited to see where this is headed.

I assume the implication is that this started in Indonesia... I don't know why the scientists first instinct is to bomb Jakarta
Yes, in the first episode they mentioned hearing something on the news about some issue going on in Jakarta while they were eating breakfast.

I just don't see bombing being that effective of a strategy. Minor critique of something pretty inconsequential

Somebody get this guy a job at the CDC. He can confidently say that the bombing wouldn't work 20 years after the bombing happens.

Strong first two episodes but the hype this show is receiving after just two episodes is INSANITY.
Also the CGI walking to the museum was so bad last night

since we are talking cool parasite now,
look up the liver lancet fluke. it infects ants and causes them to go to the tips of blades of grass at dawn and to hold on tightly. This increases that chance a cow/sheep/deer eats them which is where they want to be.
parasites are cool.

There were some tiny little game references that were pretty funny to see. Just waiting for Ellie to float on a raft.

What’s the insane hype? Its an interesting show to talk about during a time in which it’s kinda slim pickens on interesting new releases

quote:Im not surprised. the walking dead was huge when I was in school but feels like it’s old news now. This is a fresh big budget zombie show that had a high jumping off point from recently popular zombie shows like TWD that have become sour so this one was hyped from the start.

It reminds me of all the house of dragon hype got when it premiered thanks to GoT and everyone wanting to wash the awful taste of the series ending out their mouth so were happy to have anything in that universe that was decent again.

My biggest issue honestly is trying to answer when my wife asks me how this isn't just another The Walking Dead.
All I got is, well, it is. It's The Walking Dead but with a $20m per episode budget.
